Mangalore, Nov 8:
As part of the nationwide 'jail bharo' campaign by labour unions urging fixation of minimum wage of Rs 10,000 per month, the district units of unions like BMS, INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU staged a protest in front of the head post office in Pandeshwar here on Tuesday November 8.

Addressing the protestors, B Madhava, secretary, district unit of CPI(M) said that though various labour unions had come together under one umbrella and protested against the government's apathy towards the working class people in the past, no action was taken. Instead, labourers' rights were restrained, he said.

"Contract 'system' is followed by many companies and minimum wages are not given to them," he pointed out and said pension should be given and gratuity should be hiked. He criticised Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahulwalia's Rs 32-a-day definition of poverty line and termed it baseless. "Even in government concerns like BSNL and post office, work is allotted on contract basis," he said.

BMS district president Vishwanath Shetty also urged minimum wages to be fixed at Rs 10,000 per month by amending the wages act. He also said that strong punishment should be imposed on those who violate the labour law and deny the rights of labourers.

Conrad Shekar, district leader of AITUC also addressed the gathering and said that Tuesday’s picketing is a warn to the central government. "If the government is not concerned about working class people, it will have to face the consequences," he warned.

As many as 200 labourers picketed the head post office. The protest took a dramatic turn as police took all of them into custody without much effort, and only a few opposed their arrest. They were later released. Police used two vehicles, one a hired private bus, to take them into custody.

CITU leaders Vasanth Achari, Sunil Kumar Bajal among others were also present.

Rather I would propose Rs 12,000/- per month i.e. Rs 50/-per hour job x 8 hours per day x 30 days in a month = Rs 12,000/- as a minimum wages inclusive of food, tea or coffee. So that poor Employee will not go abroad just to earn mere Rs 15,000/- to Rs 20,000/- per month maximum in Gulf Countries
But same time will you please work sincerely for minimum 8 hours in a day? No, you will never work for 8 hours in a day, most of the employees are not regular at work place too, when you get salary for one month you are not traceable for next one week, you will never follow safety regulation to safe guard your own life but same time you will claim exorbitant compensation when someone dies at work place due to lack of safety measures
Claim for minimum wages we sincerely support you and willing to implement at our Company wherever we work but same time you commit yourselves to do some minimum duties too

Dear Gilson, agreed with all contents of comments, except one, i.e. the word “corrupted” should have been prefixed at “the Singh &Co, Sonia &Co, and the Opposition Parties” rather than pin pointing at “the Corrupted Opposition Parties” since we all know who is most corrupted in Current Political Scenario

Given the economic growth and cost of living in India, demand for Rs 10,000 a month by unions seems quite reasonable. Mr. Jossey Saldanha has made a valid point in this respect. Well said Jossey.

Manmohan Singh was praised for his Economic reform. Now that he heads the cabinet, where are those qualities of him ? He was lucky enough to open the ecnomy gates for the foreigners and with the inflow of overseas companies, trading firms, the inflation has constantly raised to an alarming level. Poor farmers, daily wagers are affected with these. One need more than 10 to 15,000 rs per month even in a village for a normal life.

Union is in the right move. Zindabad.

We citizen have been taken for free ride by the Singh &Co, Sonia &Co, and even the Corrupted opposition parties. Not even Single politician is clean.

Why are those police troops not joining this movement ? There was an article few weeks ago on their poor quality life style due to low wages.

    God save us

10,000 demand is justified but what about the quality of Labour.Right from the sweeper to the attender of the government offices all are lazy to the core.Nobody come to office on time and always goes home before time. All labour work should be privaticed so that there could be better check for the tax payer's money spent on these people.

Increase in minimum wages must be tied up with cost of living index with periodic automatic revision in minimum wages, so that the purchasing power will remain steady. With uncontrolled corruption, underground economy and black money, India will be heading for hyper-inflation soon.
