Mangalore: Row Over 'Exorbitant Fees' in City's Hospital Creates Chaos Again

Mangalore, Nov 12: Another chaos was witnessed at a hospital in the city following a fatal accident, this time at Omega Hospital near Kankanady - Pumpwell.

It may be recalled that a few weeks ago, a similar incident had taken place at a private hospital wherein a group of people had alleged the hospital management of charging the patient unreasonably and refusing to hand over the body without paying the dues.

On Saturday November 12, apart from the tragic death of St Agnes College student Sushmitha in a two-wheeler-lorry accident, her father Ramesh who was seriously injured was admitted to Omega hospital by a samaritan doctor, who requested to be anonymous.

Later in the day, Ramesh was declared dead. But it was alleged that the hospital authorities demanded Rs 20,000 for treating Ramesh Alape for just three hours.

When the family members requested them to release Ramesh’s body, they allegedly demanded Rs 20, 000 - Rs 9000 as ICU charges and remaining amount for bandage, glucose and other treatment charges.

Irked by this, several including Bajarang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell among others arrived at the hospital and spoke to Bharadwaj, administrator of Omega hospital and the hospital administrator finally agreed for Rs 10,000. Earlier, the hospital administration even tried to fix it at Rs 14000, but more exchange of words finally reduced it down to Rs 10,000.

Ramesh Alape used to write script for dramas and was known to be a soft-spoken person and his financial condition was also not good. His wife is a heart patient, while his son is mentally challenged.

It is alleged that even after explaining his situation earlier, the hospital administration did not heed to any appeal to reduce the charges to a reasonable amount. It was only when people gathered in large numbers that they finally agreed.

The relatives also complained that Ramesh expired on the way to hospital, but the hospital admitted him just to extract money.

Hospital's Version:

When contacted, Omega hospital administrator Dr Bharadwaj said that the bill amount was reasonable, and later, on understanding the circumstances of the patient's family they reduced the bill amount ‘on request’.

There was no argument as such, he said, adding that as soon as the request came they agreed to reduce the bill. As the tyres of the lorry had passed over Ramesh’s chest, he was in a serious condition. The bill included diabetic check up, besides, his kidney was damaged and urine was not passing, and they had to call heart and other specialists.

The doctors tried their best to save his life, he said.

It would be very difficult to judge the incident, and one cannot arrive at any conclusion unless both versions are verified. Hospitals may have their own policies, and if such incidents continue, some of the hospitals may refuse to admit the patient in serious cases fearing chaos.

District administration needs to interfere and pass a rule that would protect both the hospital management as well as patient's family in such crisis.

Sad News !!! Even if the hospital collected more money it should be resolved by mutual discussions through proper channel..
I think its not necessary for these illiterates to inter fear.

If these guys behave so cheap , hospitals will not take any emergency patients. I think there should be a policy, in case of the patient's death, hospital should only charge the actual cost incurred and not extra margins. Unnecessary blaming is a foolishness.. and there are proper channels to resolve any issues.

Lesson: Next time Omega may not admit anyone without proper deposits, prepayment, credit card security or insurance. Can BD do anything? BD go to other parts of the states, country or world and see how hospitals are operating. Can BD improve the facility in Wenlock or Govt hospital??

Mr. Santosh shetty,And all others, Guys grow up. The people who came to fight could have easily paid Rs. 20000 from their party fund or collected from people through donations. It is not ethical to blame the hospitals. How are they suppose to run business. All you who commented should try running any sort of business and see how difficult you will find if you do not receive payments that you deserve. If these things continue then the hospitals will worry about treating people. By giving Rs. 20000 Bajrang dal would have gained more from both parties.

Very sad to read such news. But this rule applies through out the country.Money becomes priority before one's life. People think twice before going to Govt hospitals b'cos of quality of treatment. No point in blaming the hospital adminstarator bcos the management calls the shots.

Mistake is a mistake from the motorbike pillion rider for not wearing the helmet. Always safety first. Rest is next. Here in the case of Ramesh Helmet also didn’t work. Precious life wanted to save and a good Samaritan (God bless him) took the patient and reached to hospital. In emergencies whichever is required will be utilized to save the patient by the hospital. Doctor is not a God. Prayers only will do wonders. Unfortunately the patient is died who was in a critical condition.
    My observations:
Protesters can only request to reduce the fees. Here they compelled the administration to reduce the fees. The hospital is not a charitable institution to go on to treat every patients with lowest charges.
    To study MBBS 40 lacks.
    Further PG study One Crore.
God only knows from where the parents will bring the money.
Why those protesters couldn’t collect money in the streets from generous people and handed over to hospital authorities after all it is only 20,000/= (The question is nobody will give money to those protesters because their character is well known to the public).
IN FUTURE NO HOSPITALS WILL ACCEPT EMERGENCY ACIDENT CASES UNLESS THEY DEPOSIT REQUIRED MONEY. THIS IS THE DAMGE MADE BY THE MINDLESS PROTESTERS. MEDIA IS DOING THEIR JOB. NOBODY CAN BLAME THE MEDIA.

    Look at a man's comment.

Dear friends, please read the second part of the article, and than pass your comments carefully. why they were not taken to govt hospital were the charges could have been less or free after all this was a private hospital. Also it would be interesting to see how much did the so called leader of a organisation donate to this family.

Mr please understand that in a emergency no one looks at whether its private or public hospital. Even though running a private hospital is tough and they have to make profit in normal cases, they might had looked differently in the case of death. If the goondagiri over life continues like this then it will difficult to get emergency life support in Mangalore. The easiest method is to have compulsory insurance either life or accident or both and there should be strict rules to have it if you own driving licence. Don't be biased on donation.there is no rules that only leaders or person in headlines have to make donation. Its upto the individuals.

    @Dr.Kiran Acharya,Manipal
Whenever you write comments here I keenly take interest to read because you always write reasonably. But sorry, Doctor I am really disappointed for this particular comment. I fail to come to a conclusion ,on reading the news item by daiji that negotiations were made by middlemen for maney/commission.I appriciate Sharan Pumpwell's gesture by way of negotiations with hospital authorities for reduction in billing for Ramesh's treatment. One should appriciate his humane gesture and genuine too.
Dear Doctor, I have high respect for you as well for the profession however I am reluctant to agree what has been said in your comment.
    Regards.

if too much of this activism happens, hospitals will ask for deposit before any treatment. sometimes major surgery with use of several cosly consumabkles can save lives. all this will not even be tried and patients allowed to die unless they pay up if they fear some goons will threaten them and walk out without any payment.only first aid can be free.any advanced treatment like surgery, ventilator etc cannot be free. the hospital can consider some concessions later.do these activists have the guts to go and threaten traders in the market for selling food items at a high price to a poor man dying of hunger.

Fearing such scenario hospitals may refuse to admit patients unless certain money is deposited in future. Those people made noise about the charges should verify the cost of medicine and other services used on the patient. This Hospital is neither a charitable nor a government hospital. Those people who made noise could contribute and request the hospital to release the body. People in authority should solve this kind happenings in future.

All of us should have a medical insurance, especially those who drive

This is a disturbing trend in private hospitals. When a critically ill patient dies after best possible treatment by the hospital, a team of self proclaimed "social activists" are alerted by some hospital employees (obviously for a tip). Then mediamen are "invited" to the hospital. Then comes the entry of "negotiators", who take up the charge of "reducing" the hospital charges for a fee from the patients relatives. Hospital administrators are then threatened to waive the bill (again the negotiators make money here!)...if hospital authorities remain firm with their decision, they face vandalism at the hospital, negative publicity over media!
This trend would result in hospitals insisting on deposit money upon arrival of the patient...precious lives may be lost in the waiting period.
Please do not make the healthcare personnel insensitive y repeated publication of such news, which indirectly is an advertisement for "negotiators".

WHAT A SHAME WHEN A PERSON TAKEN TO HOSPITAL LIKE THIS WAY IN MY OPINION 99% OF THE FAMILY NOT THINKING ABOUT THE MONEY AT THAT OF POINT. THEY ARE THINKING AND PRAYING FOR HIM. THEN WHY THE HOSPITAL PEOPLE DEMANDING MONEY FOR TREATMENT FOR RELEASING BODY. O.K FINE THEY NEED MONEY LATER THEY CAN COLLECT WITH THEIR FAMILY.
SO SOMETHING HAS TO HAS BE DONE . IN SOME CASE MONEY DOES NOT MATTER.
