Bangalore: High-level Panel Clears Rs 2792 Cr Road Projects in Karnataka

Bangalore, Nov 16: A high-level committee headed by Karnataka Chief Secretary S V Ranganath on Wednesday cleared Rs. 2792 crore road projects to be laid across the State under the Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project (KSHIP).

Karnataka’s Public Works Minister C M Udasi, who addressed the media, said the state highways would be developed in different parts of the State under the project and Rs. 800 crore would be spent before end of 2011-12.

A total sum of Rs. 2792 crore would be spent to develop 7,254 km highway roads in the State, he said.

The department would upgrade 4132 km major district roads by incurring expenditure of Rs. 2192 crore.

A sum of Rs. 53 lakh would be spent on each kilometreof road. A total of 3221 km would be asphalted by spending Rs. 604 crore. The estimated expenditure for asphalting a km road is Rs. 19.36 lakh, the minister said.

All potholes in the roads would be filled by next month end and sum of Rs. 150 crore has been released, he said.

Referring to damaged Shiradi Ghat section road, a stretch between Sakleshpur and Mangalore on NH-48, the minister said the Union Government has not been cooperating with the State for repairing the road.

It may be recalled that the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCC) had recently said the national highway 48 between Sakleshpur and Mangalore was in dire straits and the woefully inadequate infrastructure facilities in the State will act as disincentive for investors in the State.

The FKCCI president J R Bangera said the stretch between Sakleshpur and Mangalore (Shiradi Ghat of NH-48) has to be strengthened on the lines of Golden Quadrilateral to fuel the economic growth in coastal and malnad districts.

“Connectivity to the Mangalore Port is inaccessible due to the bad road in the Shiradi Ghat section. Movement of heavy trucks caused severe damage to the road,” he said.

He had said the state highway from Mysore to Mangalore was also badly damaged and repair works has not been completed. A stretch between Mani to Sampaje has become unmotorable due to potholes.

    Dear All,

Don't you think its high time we make use of the RTI Act and gather all the information on the expenditure for such public projects? Every citizen of India has the right to know where and how his tax money is spent by the government. The the whole project should be kept transparent to avoid any misuse of funds by crooks.
Every politician is enjoying on our tax money while we struggle to balance our sheets and try to make some profits with our hard and sincere efforts, to keep our families happy. Let the political leaders also do their duties promptly and sincerely, as all citizens have expected good results from them and voted them to be our leaders, to help us make this country a better, safe and happy place to live.

I recently travelled from Mangalore to Bangalore by bus. The shiradi road (called national highway!) is the worst road I have ever seen and experienced. It is supposed to be repaired every year!! Also the potholes in Mangalore are the worst of all the cities in the country. I wonder where are all these crores going to.

We hear now and then that, crore of rupees have been spent for the development of roads. Even after spending so much money if you see the road from Manglore city to the airport, pompwel, Balmatta toward st Agnes school, jyothi circle towards bunts hostel, state bank bus station behind Neharu maidan, Shedigudda towards Bijay,Pompwell to Kakanady, is really become pathetic. Dear Daijiworld Correspondent you are doing a good job could you also please take some pictures of the roads which I have mentioned to show to Mangloreans all over the world to understand the reality about the money spend and what ministers are doing.

I just returned from Mangalore today to Bangalore. It is a shame to travel on pathetic road conditions in Mangalore. Last month I travelled through Shiradi Ghat. It took two hours to cross 20 km of Shiradi Ghat. Every time I hear that Crores of Rupees are sanctioned & spent. Can any one tell me where the money is going.Who is doing this shoddy work. Can any one tell me whose heay trucks are damaging our Ghats & roads.Once asphalted why the potholes are reappearing again & again with one rainfall.

    Now wait and watch!

We don't get roads, instead we will have:

    1. One more minister will be caught in wrong tender process.

    2. One or more minister will be caught accepting bribe from the contractor.

    3. One or more minister and his followers will eat 50% of the money disbursed.

    4. The road contractor will eat another 25%.

    5. Opposition will demand CBI enquiry.

    6. The rest 25% will be actually used for the project with the faulty materials. Only the road surface will be polished.

    7. In the next rainy season the roads will be back to the same situation.

India's goods transport system mainly depends on road network. 60% goods are transported by road but in China it is less than 25%! India's Goods/Passenger transport infrastructure are overstretched and blocked by high bureaucracy.Unless we mend our system of transport with a serious thought there is no point in boasting ourselves Asia's third largest economy.Investing in infrastructure like roads which is vital for all round development for the country like INDIA.So in this context I shall appreciate DVS govt for clearing road project.
