Mangalore: National Library Week, Expo Aims to Boost Reading Habits

Mangalore, Nov 18: ‘National Library Week’ and book exhibition has been jointly organized by the Public Library Department and District Central Library, here on November 18.

The library week had begun from November 14 and will go on till November 20.

Addressing the gathering, Dr M K Bhandi, senior librarian, University of Mangalore, said  the weekly fest has been held to make people understand the importance of inculcating reading habits and to enrich the minds of individuals’. We have put every effort to get reader in and created a platform to educated themselves, he said.

In the year 1957, for the first time, Jawaharlal Nehru established National Book Trust and from then on it continued to educate people and the branches are spread at every nook and corner, explained MK Bhandi.

Every year the fest is conducted throughout the country. We play catalyst role and as an ambassador in giving information to the needy, he added. The library is open to all, reference for competitive exams, and books on various topics are available, he explained.

Ragavendra KV, deputy director, City Central Library while speaking to Daijiworld, explained its curriculum. It is the head branch of city library and there are 18 libraries located at different places in the city with one mobile library. The purpose is to provide books and readings material.

Nearly 300 readers come everyday to seek books on different topics. We also provide certificate courses in ‘Library Science Training Class’ and conduct community children development activities, he informed.
 
‘Well read man doesn’t get annoyed’ said Lalitha Rai, writer, while speaking on the occasion. Adding to it he explained, reading helps to grow in maturity level and understand life and its twists’. Reader is a contended persona, stressed Lalitha Rai.

N Ismail, principal, Badriya PU college, Sridhar Maniyani, principal, Government College, Kavoor were present on the dais. There were as many as 100 people present on the occasion.

Prior to this day, competition was held in different branches and prizes were distributed. Book exhibition cum sale was also a part of the fest.
