Mangalore, Dec 11: “If a researcher wants to become a scientist, he must publish many more papers and innovate scientific experiments,” said Dr H K Fun, international crystallographer, University of Sains, Malaysia.

Delivering the valedictory speech at the international conference on ‘Synthetic and Structural Chemistry’, organized by the department of the chemistry, University of Mangalore, on Saturday December 10, he said that researchers search scientifically and get success effectively, but they will not try to step up to the scientist.

A scientist’s advantage depends on the total publications of the papers, but in the last 20 years only 35 to 39 research papers have been presented by scientists in America. “Also, 12 men have been promoted as associate professors, 18 are promoted as professors, 15-20 have secured fellowship of the American Physical Society, and 45 members are at the National Academy of Science,” he explained.

Dr Fun remarked that the authorities must have an eye on measuring the personalities by their research achievements and talented performances. He cautioned that otherwise, worthy and scientific services may be pushed to the corner.

Dr K J Divakar, executive director, Syngenta Biosciences Pvt Ltd, Panaji, said that industries should not be ignored by chemistry. “Even universities must have more Masters programmes for health and environmental concern.  Now chemistry has become the central point of science, made as fascinating as the laboratory work. Its experiments are extended to planets, diseases of human beings and crops. But care is needed for the health and environment,” he added.

Dr B S Sherigar, former Vice Chancellor, Kuvempu University, Shimoga, presided over the concluding session.

On this occasion, some delegates exchanged their experiences and opinions about the conference on the dais. Those who displayed their artistic talent at various competitions were given prizes and mementos.
