Mumbai, Jul 20: Filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor, known for acclaimed films like Hyderabad Blues, Iqbal, and Dor, is now gearing up for a return to the big screen after a successful run in the OTT space.
Having spent the last seven years crafting web series such as City of Dreams and Modern Love Hyderabad, Kukunoor’s latest release, The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case, recently premiered on Sony LIV. Based on journalist Anirudhya Mitra’s book Ninety Days, the show follows the investigation into former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.

“The material is not political. It's a true crime thriller,” Kukunoor clarified, distancing his work from real-life political narratives. Despite handling politically charged topics, the director insists on staying within fictional boundaries.
Reflecting on his journey in streaming content, Kukunoor said, “I always wanted to explore characters in a long format. It was an exciting time when the OTT boom began. But now, the space is adjusting, and I feel it’s time to wade back into films.”
While he’s keen to return to cinema, funding remains a challenge. “I always have scripts ready. But the struggle is finding the money—especially since I don’t work with big stars,” he admitted.
Kukunoor, who has consistently chosen lesser-known talent, said this has often limited his theatrical prospects. “If I went for stars, it would be a different story. But I prefer fresh faces. That’s always been my way, even if it makes things harder,” he said.
Despite the challenges, the filmmaker remains hopeful. “I’m still here after 27 years. So we’ll see,” he signed off with quiet determination.
