DK district sees rise in temperature; heatstroke preparedness in govt hospitals

Mangaluru, Mar 23: Dakshina Kannada (DK) district has been witnessing a rise in temperature over the past few days, with 39°C recorded recently. As a precautionary measure to treat patients affected by heatstroke due to the hot winds expected in the coming days, special beds have been reserved in taluk hospitals across the district, including Mangaluru.

At Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru, a dedicated ward with five beds has been readied. In taluk hospitals at Beltangady, Sullia, Puttur and Bantwal, separate treatment rooms with two beds each have been prepared. These rooms have been equipped with essential medicines, air conditioning and other emergency facilities.

District health officer Dr Thimmayya stated that the health department will write to the district education department to create awareness among students in schools and colleges about precautions to be taken during heatwave conditions and intense sunlight.

He also cautioned that excessive heat could adversely affect children and urged vigilance. Symptoms of heat-related illness in children may include loss of consciousness, muscle cramps, seizures, headache, excessive sweating, weakness, dizziness, incoherent speech, increased breathing and heart rate, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in getting up from bed, and body temperature rising above 40.5°C. In such cases, as first aid, the child’s body should be wiped with a wet cloth, made to lie down with legs slightly elevated, and a fan should be used. If the child is unconscious, food or drink should not be given. In case of severe symptoms, the child should be immediately taken to the nearest health centre.

People have been advised to take precautions to prevent heatstroke. Strenuous work during afternoon hours should be avoided, and adequate water intake should be ensured. Consumption of sugary or carbonated drinks should be limited as they can lead to dehydration. Wearing light-coloured clothing and taking frequent breaks while working outdoors are also recommended.

In terms of first aid, a person affected by heatstroke should be made to lie down in a cool place and their body should be wiped with a wet cloth. Water should be given frequently, and once the person recovers, food with high water content should be provided.
