Washington, May 9: A Hindu prayer invoking global peace and unity was recited at the White House during the National Day of Prayer, highlighting religious diversity in the United States as the country moves closer to its 250th year of independence.
The prayer was offered by a volunteer representing the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a Hindu spiritual organisation. According to BAPS, the participation reflected the group’s ongoing engagement in interfaith and public service initiatives.

The session began with a request for collective reflection, as the volunteer asked participants to close their eyes and join in prayer. The invocation featured traditional chants of “Om Shanti,” repeatedly emphasising peace and harmony.
The prayer extended across all elements of existence, calling for peace in the sky, space, earth, water, and among all living beings. It also stressed harmony in nature and the environment, expressing a wish for universal tranquility.
Alongside the broader cosmic message, the prayer also focused on individual well-being, seeking peace on physical, mental, and spiritual levels for all.
The volunteer concluded by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to participate, acknowledging the organisation’s spiritual leadership and community.
Following the event, BAPS Public Affairs said in a social media statement that it was honoured to take part in the National Day of Prayer at the White House. The organisation added that such occasions reflect shared values of faith, service, and unity that help strengthen communities.
On the same occasion, US President Donald Trump issued a message reflecting on the nation’s tradition of prayer and faith. He said the observance honoured America’s long-standing belief in divine guidance and expressed gratitude as the country approaches its 250th anniversary of independence.
He also referred to historical traditions of prayer in American history, noting that early leaders of the nation had once declared days of fasting and prayer during the struggle for independence, underscoring what he described as a longstanding spiritual foundation in the country’s development.
