Bengaluru, Jun 18: The southwest monsoon has become more active across Karnataka, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in most parts of the state, including Bengaluru, over the coming week. Authorities have issued weather alerts for several districts as rainfall activity is expected to intensify.
The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada are expected to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds until June 19. Weather alerts have also been issued for Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Ballari and Vijayapura districts, where thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely. Coastal Karnataka has been witnessing active monsoon conditions in recent weeks, with the IMD warning of heavy rainfall spells and possible weather-related disruptions.

Although Bengaluru has received intermittent showers over the past few days, monsoon conditions are now becoming more active. Rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours until June 19.
Similar weather conditions are expected in Mysuru, Tumakuru, Kolar, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu districts.
Meanwhile, Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Davanagere and Vijayanagara districts may experience a mix of sunshine and cloudy conditions, with scattered rainfall likely at a few places. Light to moderate rain is expected to continue across several south interior Karnataka districts.
Reports indicate that the onset of El Niño conditions could result in below-normal rainfall in Karnataka between June and September. Experts suggest that farmers and agricultural workers should make efforts to conserve and store available rainwater to prepare for possible rainfall shortages later in the season.
Authorities have advised people not to take shelter under trees or remain in open areas during thunderstorms and lightning activity. Fishermen have been urged to exercise caution along the coast due to rough weather conditions. Farmers and daily commuters are advised to monitor weather forecasts and plan their activities accordingly. Residents of low-lying areas should remain alert as heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging and related problems.
With the monsoon expected to strengthen further in the coming days, weather officials have urged the public to stay updated on changing weather conditions and follow official advisories.
