Mangaluru, Jun 19: The massive dredger ship 'Bhagavati Prem', which had been stranded at the Guddekopla beach in Surathkal for the past few years, is finally being dismantled. With the removal work currently in progress, a major attraction that had turned into a popular selfie point for locals and tourists is slowly disappearing from the coastline.

A few years ago, during the monsoon season, the 'Bhagavati Prem' dredger, originally brought in for dredging operations and anchored at the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), broke its anchor due to heavy rain and fierce winds. Succumbing to the rough sea conditions, the vessel lost control, drifted, and eventually ran aground at the Guddekopla beach in Surathkal. Due to technical challenges, authorities were unable to tow the giant vessel back into the sea.

What was initially a maritime accident unexpectedly transformed the Surathkal Guddekopla beach into a bustling tourist spot. Hundreds of people flocked to the beach daily to witness the massive ship stranded on the shore. It became a favorite destination for families to spend their evenings and a highly sought-after backdrop for selfies. The 'Guddekopla dredger' became an iconic landmark for the locals and a prime walking spot for senior citizens.

Despite its popularity as a tourist attraction, the stranded ship posed significant challenges for the local fishing community. Fishermen and residents consistently urged authorities to remove the vessel, citing that it was obstructing fishing activities and posing a threat of environmental pollution. With complaints mounting over the course of several monsoons, the port department eventually awarded a contract to dismantle and remove the ship.

The dismantling work is now proceeding at a brisk pace. The operations are being strategically carried out during periods when the sea is calm and clear. Skilled laborers are using gas cutters to systematically break the huge vessel into scrap iron pieces right on the spot. Furthermore, specialized technology is being deployed to safely cut and remove the underwater sections of the dredger.

Addressing environmental concerns, the contractors have assured that all necessary precautionary measures are strictly in place to prevent any oil spills or marine pollution during the dismantling process. The entire operation is reportedly being executed in full compliance with environmental regulations.
