Mangaluru, Jun 21: Widespread outrage has erupted against the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) after its officials allegedly carried out an 'inhuman' and illegal eviction drive, using a bulldozer to destroy the flower stalls of differently-abled street vendors.
The incident took place on the road opposite the deputy commissioner's office near Padil. The affected vendors, Chandrahas and Sunitha, had been running their flower business at the spot for the past 12 years.

Victims narrate their ordeal
Speaking to the media, Chandrahas, who has a 75 per cent physical disability, expressed his anguish. "I have been running this roadside flower business for 12 years to support my family. I even possess a valid vending certificate and identity card issued by the city corporation under the street vendors act. The officials launched this operation without issuing any prior notice or providing alternative arrangements. They have committed an atrocity against a differently-abled person and trampled upon my right to livelihood," he alleged.
Sunitha, another victim of the eviction drive, broke down in tears while narrating her ordeal. "I am differently-abled and a widow who lost her husband to cancer. I was running this small business with great difficulty to secure my children's future. The city corporation officials showed absolutely no pity and ruthlessly destroyed my pushcart. By snatching away my only source of livelihood, they have pushed my family onto the streets," she lamented.
Union leaders condemn MCC action
Following the incident, a delegation led by B K Imtiyaz, honorary president of the Dakshina Kannada District Street Vendors Association (CITU), visited the spot. They consoled the distressed vendors and assured them of full support to fight for their right to continue their business.
Lashing out at the authorities, Imtiyaz stated, "The city corporation commissioner and administrators often issue statements saying only those with valid ID cards and certificates will be allowed to do business. Yet, they have heartlessly attacked differently-abled vendors who hold these exact ID cards. This is a clear violation of the law protecting street vendors."
He accused the officials of acting ruthlessly and without any compassion toward the differently-abled. Imtiyaz strongly demanded strict action against the officials involved in the unlawful operation.
Association leaders Muzafar Ahmed, Santosh R S, and Vijay Jain were present during the spot visit.
