New Delhi, June 21: In a major reform push aimed at improving passenger services and streamlining railway operations, the ministry of Railways is planning to significantly enhance the operational, administrative and financial powers of Station Masters across the country.

The proposal was discussed during a high-level review meeting chaired by railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, where senior officials examined the challenges faced by Station Masters and reviewed a comprehensive framework designed to make train operations safer, more efficient and more passenger-oriented.

According to the Railways, detailed deliberations were held to assess the day-to-day operational and administrative difficulties faced by Station Masters, with a view to strengthening their effectiveness in managing station-level responsibilities.

The statement added that proposals related to enhanced responsibilities, improved career progression and greater opportunities to rise into higher management roles were also examined.

Station Masters currently serve as key functionaries in ensuring safe train operations, coordinating between departments, managing passenger facilities and overseeing the smooth functioning of stations. Under the proposed changes, their role is expected to be further strengthened as the Railways seeks to handle rising passenger volumes and increasingly complex operational demands.

A key area of discussion was the deployment of additional Station Masters in multi-track and high-density railway sections, where traffic levels and operational complexity have increased significantly. The Railways also reviewed plans to introduce mobile application-based paperless working systems to improve efficiency and reduce manual processes at stations.

Modernisation of training and capacity building also formed an important part of the review. Officials discussed upgrading training methodologies through the use of virtual reality tools, simulators and other advanced technologies, aimed at better preparing Station Masters to handle complex operational scenarios and emergency situations.

The proposed measures are intended to empower Station Masters to take quicker decisions, improve passenger service delivery and more effectively manage station infrastructure, staff coordination, railway colonies and other associated facilities.

Several specific administrative and structural reforms were also reviewed during the meeting. The Railways emphasised the need to fill vacancies in the Station Master cadre on a priority basis to ensure smooth station operations and meet growing workload requirements.

The development of an Integrated Station Management System was also discussed, aimed at improving coordination among various railway departments and enabling faster resolution of passenger-related issues.

Another major proposal considered was the enhancement of financial powers of Station Masters, allowing them greater autonomy to address local operational issues and improve passenger convenience. Officials noted that decentralisation of financial authority is expected to enable quicker maintenance response and more efficient station management.

The review further focused on improving career progression opportunities for Station Masters, with the objective of providing clearer pathways to senior management and leadership positions within the organisation.

The Railways said the overall initiative is aimed at strengthening frontline decision-making, modernising station operations and significantly enhancing the quality of passenger services across the Indian Railways network.
