Udupi: Rowdy-sheeter Charan Raj detained under Goonda Act

Udupi, Jun 24: In a significant move against habitual offenders, the district administration has ordered the detention of a notorious rowdy-sheeter under the provisions of the Goonda Act.

Charan Raj (29), a resident of Bhandar House in Kumdel, Pudu village of Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district, has been detained following an order issued on June 24 by the Udupi district magistrate and deputy commissioner. The order was passed based on a report submitted by the Udupi superintendent of police (SP).

10 cases registered

According to police records, Charan Raj is a rowdy-sheeter under the jurisdiction of the Udupi city police station and has been involved in multiple criminal activities. A total of 10 cases have been registered against him at the Bantwal Rural, Surathkal, Mangaluru East, and Udupi city police stations. The cases include charges related to attempted murder, assault, unlawful assembly, offences against women, consumption and trafficking of narcotic substances, and violations under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Of the 10 cases registered against him, three have resulted in convictions, two ended in acquittals, four are currently under trial before the courts, and one case remains under investigation.

Authorities have ordered that the accused be lodged in the central prison at Shivamogga under the preventive detention provisions of the Goonda Act.
