Udupi: First-ever meningocele surgery at Adarsha Hospital successfully treats two-month-old baby

Media Release

Udupi, Jun 29: A two-month-old baby born with meningocele, a congenital spinal condition, was successfully treated at Adarsha Hospital, Udupi, bringing immense relief and joy to the child’s family.

The delicate surgery was performed by renowned paediatric neurosurgeon Dr Rajesh Nair and his team, with the support of experienced anaesthesiologists. Meningocele is a birth defect in which a sac containing spinal membranes protrudes through an opening in the baby's spine due to incomplete spinal development. As a result of the condition, the infant was unable to lie comfortably on the back before the surgery.

During the surgery, the surgical team carefully removed the protruding sac and corrected the underlying spinal defect. The operation was completed successfully, and the baby recovered well.

Following the surgery, the baby showed remarkable improvement and was able to lie comfortably on the back for the first time. After being closely monitored for three days, the infant was discharged in good health.

The baby’s mother and family members were very happy and relieved with the results. They expressed their sincere thanks to Dr Rajesh Nair and his team, Dr Guruprasad Shetty, paediatrician, and the management and staff of Adarsha Hospital, Udupi, for their care and support. This is also a proud moment for the hospital, as it was the first time such a surgery was performed there.

Doctors highlighted that timely treatment played an important role in the baby’s smooth recovery, and this case shows how proper medical care can make a big difference even at a very young age.
