Bengaluru, June 29: In a significant tightening of the implementation of its flagship Gruha Jyothi free electricity guarantee scheme, the Karnataka government has announced that fresh applications will be issued to households as part of a statewide revalidation exercise aimed at curbing alleged misuse and ensuring that only eligible beneficiaries continue to receive the subsidy.
Chief Minister D K Shivakumar made the announcement while addressing a felicitation programme organised by the Karnataka Electricity Transmission Corporation Employees’ Union and allied associations at Palace Grounds in Bengaluru on Sunday.

He said that around 1.64 crore beneficiaries are currently availing the Gruha Jyothi scheme, but reports of widespread irregularities had prompted the government to strengthen verification and enforcement mechanisms.
“The benefit should be available only to the people of our state. Those who have come from other states to earn their livelihood here, or those who are not voters in Karnataka, will no longer be eligible for the Gruha Jyothi scheme,” the chief minister said.
He further warned that electricity connections registered under the same name at multiple locations, if found availing the benefit, would be identified and disconnected without delay.
As part of the revised process, the government will distribute fresh application forms door-to-door to improve transparency and accountability. Energy Department staff will personally verify applicants’ photographs and supporting details before approvals are granted.
The chief minister reiterated that while the government is committed to eliminating misuse and ensuring strict compliance, genuine beneficiaries must not be denied the scheme under any circumstances.
