Mumbai, Sep 19: Music composer Amaal Mallik has said he spent years privately seeking proper credit for his work on the Bollywood song Main Hoon Hero Tera, before speaking publicly about the issue.
Amaal composed the title track, which was initially sung by his brother Armaan Malik and later recorded by actor Salman Khan. He has alleged that he and lyricist Kumaar were not properly credited for their contributions.
Explaining his decision to speak publicly, Amaal said he had contacted labels, production houses, actors and others involved over the past decade, requesting that the required credits and metadata be added across music-streaming platforms.
He said the requests did not result in the changes he sought and that he eventually raised the issue publicly after what he described as a failure to provide him with due credit as an artist.
Amaal said his father, music composer Daboo Malik, had remained silent about the matter for around 15 years out of respect for industry relationships. He said his father came forward only after the situation had gone too far.
The composer also recalled having to seek credit for songs he composed for M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, his first solo soundtrack, in 2016. He said he had continued to face similar issues a decade later.
Amaal said he did not want the matter to be described as a “controversy”, but as an issue concerning due credit, authorship and accountability.
His latest remarks came days after Salman Khan Films shared a social media post marking 11 years of Main Hoon Hero Tera. The post featured Salman Khan performing the song but did not mention Amaal as its composer.
Amaal responded to the post, questioning why the composer and lyricist had not been named while celebrating the song. He said creating a song involved significant work by the composer and lyricist and that their contributions should also be recognised.
He also requested the person handling the social media account not to delete his comment, saying he wanted Salman Khan to see it.
