Mangaluru, Oct 5: Milagres College of Nursing organized a World Heart Day awareness programme on October 5 at the College Auditorium, based on the theme ‘Don’t Miss a Beat'. The programme was conducted with the primary objective of equipping students with essential knowledge and practical skills related to first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), along with promoting awareness about heart health and the importance of timely intervention during cardiac emergencies.

The gathering included Dr Diana Lobo, principal, Milagres College of Nursing; Fr Uday Joseph Fernandes, principal, Milagres Central School; Jyothi Naik, programme coordinator; resource persons; faculty members; and 68 students of Milagres Central School.

The programme commenced with compering by Sobiya, who welcomed the gathering and coordinated the proceedings.

The main highlight of the programme was a practical training session on first aid and CPR. The students were introduced to the basic steps to be followed during a cardiac emergency, including recognizing an emergency, seeking immediate medical assistance, assessing the person, initiating CPR, and providing appropriate first aid until professional help arrives. The session emphasized the importance of early recognition, prompt action, and effective CPR during cardiac emergencies.

The students actively participated in the hands-on CPR demonstration and practice session, which enabled them to develop confidence in performing basic life-saving measures. The interactive training helped the students understand the importance of timely and appropriate intervention in saving lives.

A quiz competition on heart health, cardiovascular disease prevention, first aid, and CPR was also conducted to assess and reinforce the students’ understanding of the topics covered during the programme. The students participated enthusiastically, making the session both educational and engaging.

The resource persons for the programme were Dr Diana Lobo, Jyothi Cutinha, and Diana D’Lima, who provided valuable guidance and facilitated the awareness and practical training sessions.

The programme concluded with the prize distribution to the winners of the quiz competition, recognizing their active participation and knowledge. This was followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Layrin, who expressed gratitude to the management, principal, resource persons, faculty members, coordinators, and students for their valuable contribution and participation.

The programme was successfully conducted and provided the students with an opportunity to gain practical first aid and CPR skills, strengthen their knowledge of heart health, and develop confidence in responding appropriately during cardiac emergencies. The programme served as a meaningful initiative to promote awareness of cardiovascular health and the importance of timely action in saving lives.
