Nigeria set to Immortalize Late Football Star

Kwara (Nigeria), May 13 (IANS): Nigeria intends to organize an under-15 football championship in honour of the late iconic football star Rashidi Yekini who died last weekend, according to chairman of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Aminu Maigari.

The official also said a committee had been formed to work out a plan to immortalize the 1993 African Footballer of the Year.

"There is no time to mention Rashidi Yekini's achievements in the football world. He is dead today, but his name is not dead and he will be remembered forever," the NFF chairman was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

He said a memorial football match would also be organized and played in Ilorin, capital of the Kwara State, in honour of the star, with the proceeds from the match going to his family.

"We also plan to propose to the National Sports Commission (NSC) for Yekini to be given a national honour," he added.
