Udupi: Increase in water level in wells, streams baffles Parkala residents

Udupi, Apr 25: A miracle of sorts has been witnessed in Parkala, as wells and streams, which usually dry up in summer, have seen an increase in the level of water.

About a dozen wells have gradually filled with water over the week, despite the absence of rains. Needless to say, the sight has brought a sense of much relief and joy coupled with awe.

While the Udupi administration has been thinking of ways to ensure that citizens do not face water shortage till the onset of monsoons, this natural phenomenon is seen by some as a divine blessing. Both laypersons as well as experts seem to be baffled.

It is that streams in Kelaparkala had dried up, but over last week or so, water has began to appear again and the level has steadily increased. The residents, some of whom have been here all their lives, said that they had never see such a phenomenon before. It is nothing short of a miracle, they said.

Given the harsh summer heat, the locals are more than joyous. Many were seen getting down into the fresh water for a dip or just to cool their heels, literally.

At the same time, there is some level of anxiety too, as it is said such sudden appearance of water may be a sign of an imminent earthquake. Geologists believe that water appears on the surface of earth in this manner when a layer of the soil gives way. Nevertheless, most people have chosen to think of it as a boon and are happy that they will not have to face a shortage of water in peak summer.

People may think that turning of Mahim water was a miracle. It was not.
In fact after the heavy rain in Mumbai,a huge volume of freshwater had gone into the sea, which was floating over the sea water, till the freshwater got mixed up with the saline sea water. After a few days the "fresh water" had turned into saline water. This a very common phenomenon in the ocean close to heavy rainfall areas. It is our ignorance that may us believe in "miracles".

A major fault zone runs along East- west Direction along Malpe to Agumabe alignment, passing through northern part of Manipal. Due to distubances in the movement of crustal plates (technically known as Neotectonic movements) seismic activities of minor intensity do occur periodically along this weak fracture zone. A few years ago during August 2009 minor seismic movements have been felt at Tottam near Malpe.
Similar but minor imperceptible quake some three weeks ago near Manipal appears to have triggered minor earth movement and disturbance of groundwater bearing (aquifer) layers that resulted in the outflow of groundwater from Manipal plateau towards Baidarabettu and Kelaparkala. Seepage towards Baidarbettu has already been ceased, but Kelaparkala valley is still receiving the groundwater seepage.
The waater is clean, especially in the streamlet, ruling out seepage from drainage sources.Similarly, there is no signs of leakage from the water purification and pumping station of Manipal.

It will come as no surprise that somewhere else the wells have dried up faster than usual. The geologists are correct in pointing out that the water table has been disturbed in some area.

Such hydrogeological changes are seen after an earthquake in a number of places, but before the earth quake such rise in water table levels is doubtful. Moreover, there is no major fault line running through this area to support the earthquake theory.

First, the water needs to be tested in laboratory for purity before using it. The entrie area of Manipal and parkala the under ground water is inter connected and more importantly the land is mostly hard soil used for carving laterite stone erlier. It should be ensured that there is no seapage of drain water to parkala from Manipal.

By now Parkala Pachayat should have taken samples for testing to find out what type of water and from where it is filtered in these areas which used to be dry for decades during this time of the year.
If one keeps on harping on miracles and just use it as evening talking subject, then many people may fall sick using this seeped water from "Somewhere" ...
Geologist, colleges (MIT..) around in the area or nearby can act fast and try to find out the reason.

If this water is potable, then there can’t be good news for locals (miracle or otherwise) especially in the wake of meteorological forecast for 2014 that the monsoon would most probably be below par, thanks to El Nino.

I can say that miracles can be done by God ,he can do anything...If anyone believes in God then have to believe in miracles.Sudden water appearing on dry land means there should some underground water supply pipes may blasted...or some of mine industries or companies have pumped water to the lower places. That is the cause of increased water in ponds and wells.

This no miracle, it could be man made calamity. Unlimited bore wells, fracking, senseless mining and destruction of nature can result into this. Before any human use this water needs to tested for its quality. Villagers must insist on this. If the water is of good quality, indeed it is a matter of joy and happy life. Water is equal to life.

True, it could be Industrial Polluted water finding its way through underground water streams to these wells. Without testing, don't use it as Industrial chemicals are dangerous for the health of human animals as well as those crops irrigated by these effluents getting back into the food chain.

Look at the happiness on their face ..the hope.
Well, time for govt to open their eyes ..and get into action than simply talking..
Every of water to be channeled into reservoirs... build mini dams .bring up the water table....collected ..stored and harvested.
do not let the water seep into the sea and go waste..
work like the chinese ... they connect all the rivers...they collect the water in reservoirs and then let them through channels to build dams across.
So, let the engineers do their duty only get the plans ..programmes on paper..simulate on computer ..study the flow..and start constructing the channels ..dams etc..
