307 Saudi women sue dads in 7 months

Jeddah, May 30 (Emirates 247) : Three hundred and seven Saudi women have filed court cases against their father over the past seven months because they refused to let them marry.

The women told courts that their fathers refused their marriage to men they favored under the excuse they are not qualified husbands.

The capital Riyadh recorded the largest number of such cases, standing at 76, followed by the Gulf Kingdom’s second largest city of Jeddah, with 71 cases.

The Arabic language daily Al Hayat quoted justice ministry data but did not give details of those cases.

Ladies and gentlemen of Saudi Arabia,

I am so sorry that this is happening to you. Do I think that life is so perfect in the West that we can do no wrong here? No, of course not. Yet I started reading about these cases in the Middle East for the first time today. My heart has ached all day as a result.

I married a husband of my own choosing at age 23 and can't imagine life without him. He has thought about life without me due to my medical history that has brought me near death a number of times, and he has told me that when one of us dies it is going to be hell for the other one. He may be right because we are close, but I would still prefer the pain of having loved and lost than having had love denied me as is apparently common in Saudi Arabia.

I am so sorry and hope that change comes in time for you. God, or perhaps I should say Allah, bless you.
