Mangalore, Jun 25: In a raid operation here on Wednesday June 25, a team led by Praveen Chandra Karkera, MCC assistant revenue officer, Manjayya Shetty, health officer, Balakrishna Gowda town planning officer and others from MCC razed down all the petty shops located under three flyovers in the city.

The raids were carried out at Kuntikan, Kottara Chowki and Kulur flyovers.

Speaking to the media, Balakrishna said that the petty shop owners were warned a month ago to clear the area, but they refused to move.

"We were getting many complaints from the locals, and hence we visited the spot and saw trash strewn on the ground. There were liquor bottles in the dustbin next to the petty shops. Locals said some of the petty shop owners were consuming alcohol in the day time too," he added.

During the raids, the roads were blocked as curious commuters stopped in the middle of the road to see what was happening.

Please guys do you want people to earn their livelihood with hard work and honesty as much as possible or do you prefer them to become Robbers/thief's/ murderers etc. it is your choice.
If all has been created by God , all have the same desires in their hearts even they have their wants too, if this happens to you would you be happy or will you find a alternative way to earn your lively hood, do you want them to become a head ache to the society?!! ,
At least now the choice is yours to eat in their place or not to eat, but once you destroy his lively hood and take away a person’s hope of tomorrow, then all become his prey and with no choice! so be rational support the mini entrepreneurial skills they are developing all the todays great Entrepreneurs have started off in the same manner including the person who is holding the highest office of this country.
MCC definitely has the Moral responsibility of maintaining hygiene, security and safety but these untoward actions may ricochet in very different form!!
Keeping in mind and India still is a developing country so we should slowly start training these persons who have invested their time and money, to maintain and be obliged to conform to the Mandatory EHS requirements.

What about auto/bike mechanics, tyre mechanics, or any other such enterprises doing business on footpaths. They use the footpath and block the pathway for the pedestrians. The MCC should take action against these such hindrances.

You are absolutely right Pooja. I have personally seen it all. They say Banjik malpuni. But they are not so poor. They own mini vans, pick ups, scooters etc. and do not pay a single rupee as tax but lots of money to pay hafta to some officials and their well wishers who are pretending to be their saviors.

I hope MCC officials are serious at least this time. We have seen all these once-in-a-year raids before and the hide and seek drama continues. The petty shop owners who are hiding will reappear soon and the officials will go into hiding.

This is a government land, which is not under the control of the street vendors, but the space and materials is being leased and sub let by the powerful in the group on certain terms and conditions. Also a few officials we are told, are in hand-in-glove with them.

If you have the authority use it, if there is a rule implement it strictly all over the city with regular raids throughout the year and utilize the space under all the fly overs for better purpose like paid parking, gardens etc and make our city beautiful.

Other wise stop this natak in front of the media. We are not impressed at all.

Demolition of petty shops under the flyovers is a welcome and good move by MCC officers but it should not be limited to petty shoppers under the flyovers only. There are many other illegal activities is going on in the city, that also should be stopped.MCC officers should aware of all these activities.Which is self explanatory.
From hygienic point of view this is the correct step taken by the MCC officers. These petty shop owners though they are earning their livelihood decently, they not only create the nuisance in the area, block the traffic, consume liquor while doing business, make the entire place of their business area dirty but also the food/stuff served by them is not clean and hygienic.
However on humanitarian ground they should be allotted a separate space for carrying out their business with proper license and should be warned to keep the area neat and tidy. The staff on the counter should also follow the hygienic part such as neatly dressed, clean shave etc.MCC should show leniency in dealing with such cases and should be served notice and give enough time for shifting their place of business. Also they should be reasonably charged the rent.Because they too human beings like others with family and children to support.Keeping all these points in mind concerned officials, departments should act.

When builders build illegal structures they are pardoned with a fine. Why not these petty shop owners ? What is the big crime they have committed for the MCC to destroy their livelihood ? It is wrong even before God.

I feel very sorry for the poor people who try to make a living in a humble way.But the problem is that they conduct their business in very unhealthy way. They generate lots of waste which stinks and specially in rainy season it becomes a breeding place for mosquitoes, flies etc.
The corporation must provide some space for such businesses officially at very reasonable rent with a strict instruction to keep the surrounding clean other wise to cancel their license.
We feel sorry when the corporation takes action on these poor people. But suppose those people open their shop near our house compound gate, would we have felt sorry for them and encouraged them to continue?

Why did the MCC have to do this to Omlet carts. Poor people eat hot and fresh omlets everyday. The MCC has deprived the poor from a hot meal.

The shop site under the overbridge was a good shelter from the monsoon .

These petty and poor shop owners have no other livelihood. Why destroy them and their families by doing this. It will be a curse if you destroy the livelihood of a poor man.

When there will be such raids in B.C. Road? Lots of shops are there under the flyovers. Few years back the shops were removed in pumpwell area but now again we can see lots of shop near the circle. There is no proper footpath near the one and only KSRTC bus stand just few steps away from MCC. The complete stretch from KPT to MCC no footpath or clear drainage facility. From past three years I can see tenders are called for this stretch but no work started as of yet. Also there are shops on footpath near saibeen complex to KSRTC bus stand stretch.

NO MORE rain because of all construction. The moisture in the area and the vegetation that has been removed has caused clouds to just pass over. The new buildings have made life miserable in Mangalore because people from out of Mangalore can live here in flats. Now there is talk about a new BURG in Mangalore. It is already too late. If we want to retain the beauty and serenity and sanity of Mangalore we should stop all these new constructions.

All though Law is equal for everyone this is not the case with MCC or Mr Balakrishna Gowda. There is not a single instance of any demolition or razing of any building in Mangalore which is illegal. The same applies to Dr Manjayya Shetty. There is one illegal canteen near my house for which all the Residents have objected and submitted a memorandum.Instead of closing down the place the MCC has issued a notice for a place which does not even exist in their records as it is not having any licence. Therefore, I feel sad and pity for these poor people who make their ends meet with difficulty.

Yes this is correctly done... "But where was MCC from past so many years sleeping".. But i think this petty shop guy earns more than the full fledged shops in mall.I think we should provide space for them and turn it to be a square like in kadri park road. And i feel the space below flyovers should be used for something like, parking or mini market or may be vendors but in a more systematic way.

Well done MCC but I have seen this (drama)a few times before at the same spot. In days to come (may be even tomorrow) the owners of these so called petty shops will be back in action. Here is where follow up is required to ensure they do not return. Otherwise what MCC did to day is considered as a publicity stunt and is a waste of time, energy and resources. I shall be very happy if they prove me wrong. Time will tell.

Well done MCC..It is high time that this mess had to be cleared to get rid of the public nuisance which used to be created under the flyovers. But, please make sure that new petty shops don't spring up again right under your nose. There should be a concerted effort by MCC and all parties concerned to root out this menace once and for all. Concerned people who collect bribes from these petty shopkeepers must be caught and shamed or if possible hang them from the flyovers !!!

Actually yes, if you see from those shop keepers, we may feel pity on them. But it's not acceptable. If left free, everybody want to run business with out any tax, free of cost. But there is a rules and regulations. We can not blindly break those and come up with our shops anywhere we like. It's really disturbing. Initially it will be a small shop then slowly expands keeping their stuffs around or throwing the wastage. So, it's a good act by MCC to clean up these areas. If you have seen these three areas ( Kuntikaan / Kulur and Kottara ), all these places were filled with all drunkards or eve teasers and all creating a lot of troubles to the surroundings. Well done.

It is a good move by MCC Officials to demolish Petty Shops. These are small shops. MCC Officials what about " PRETTY " shops, bigger sharks in our city who have encroached Govt land, other people's land, what will authorities do about these bigger " Sharks " in the city, while trying to nab small petty fish.!!
What about builders who block roads with their building materials for months together? Does any one even look at these problem.
I travel by Bejai New Road till end, where we live, look that road, parking on both sides, builders dumping building materials on either sides, it is always a chaos around..!!
Can MCC do anything about this?

The police men of these areas need to be suspended to teach them a lesson. Sad to see no much comments here. If the news was about communal, then people jump to criticize each other.
