Kozhikode, Jun 30: Smugglers of gold are getting innovative by the day. A passenger at Karipur (Calicut) airport was caught on Sunday June 29 trying to smuggle in gold worth Rs 20.5 lac concealed in jars of honey.

The customs officials at the airport intercepted a passenger identified as Abdul Samad Mohammed Ali (21), a resident of Ichlangode, who arrived from Sharjah at the airport on Sunday.

The customs officials grew suspicious on noticing Abdul's gait and questioned him, besides checking his luggage. The officials found jars of honey in the bag, and on further examination, found powdered gold mixed with the honey.

They also found 68 pellets of gold weighing 698 grams in the jars.

The jars were concealed under some clothes in his bag.

In the past, customs officials at the Calicut airport had seized gold smuggled in various ways, hidden in electronics or even coated with grease. This is the first time they came across gold concealed in honey jars, sources said.

Absolutely true. Revert the custom duty back to what it was last year and all smuggling will stop. Rather than taking the right step that benefits everybody, the government itself is encouraging such smuggling by creating artificial price differentiation between price of gold in international markets to that in India. This is exploited by a few smugglers but today everybody is treated like a smuggler. Look at the amount of time the customs officers take in scanning each individual and baggage while entering the country - They treat everyone as cheats just to catch these few individuals. Time for government to concentrate on simple governance that benefits all rather than negative governance that seriously impacts majority of the innocent people.

Wow wa onji mande ya, Smugglers will surely find new ways to continue smuggling. The Modi led BJP govt must urgently reduce the duties and taxes on gold to avoid the need to smuggle & should increase the limit of free import of gold. Most of the gold lovers are from kerala.

Now no one is barking\blaming the Government\Finance Minister for keeping duties\to reduce or entirely remove duties on gold\ornaments.
What is the reason for this sudden silence from those who were barking earlier?
