Mangalore, Jul 4: Students of Deralakatte Aided Junior Primary School went on a protest march from the school to the junction near Belma grama panchayat and held a protest in front of the panchayat office on Thursday July 3 opposing the throwing of garbage near their school.

People have been throwing garbage near the state highway and in front of the panchayat office for the past many years. As the school is situated close by, the students have to study holding their breath.

Though trash piles up in front of the panchayat office and the locals have pleaded for cleaning of the place, there has been no response. The children condemned the apathy shown and urged the concerned authorities to remove trash from the place.

The trash gets cleared once a week and the panchayat pays Rs 4,000 from its personal fund to move it to Vamanjoor. The panchayat has issued notices to the commercial buildings in the area to maintain cleanliness. A complaint has been lodged with Konaje police seeking action against those who throw garbage here.

Two people who were throwing trash were identified by those keeping watch at night and a complaint was registered at Konaje police station. However, people are still throwing trash and getting away with it. “A trash disposal unit proposed at Kanekere survey number 51 and the related files are in the office of the Assistant Commissioner,” said Shanti, acting development official of the panchayat.

Vishwanath Kayarapalike from Ayyappa Temple, school headmaster Vaman, retired teacher Kittanna Rai, Yashodhar Bagambila, Gopinath Bagambila, Ganesh, and Sunil Padyana led the protests.

As always each one blaming the other, have each one of you seen how the garbage goes out of your house, do u and ur family and kids really put in just a few seconds before u dump most of ur house waste into a plastic bag and throw it in the dumpster or by the side of the road. Take care of your earth together, no one man or organization can do it, it takes everyone collective effort to clean up the mess, beginning from each ones house. Be wise consumers, consume less, waste even lesser. Check the programs on Satyameva Jayete, there would be no garbage at all if each one of us wisens up and not just gives wise cracks on every topic.

The time you spend on commenting (and also dreaming on pink skirt) can also be utilised for eradicating garbage in Goa...!

By the way, it is difficult to eradicate the garbage in Goa. I am trying to remove the garbage from the mind of one person from Mapusa from very long time, but still.:-(

ha ha ha... we should be proud of ourselves. These small kids have to come forward to teach us lesson. What a shame. We are supposed to teach them how to behave in public, discipline, social responsibility and here is a classic example what we are teaching them. It's not at all a major problem if any authorities make their mind. Just have an eye on the spot for a short duration and penalise all those who come to throw wastage there... it should be a combined act by police as well as panchayat. No fun in blaming anybody. You collect penalty from those people or make them to take care of the garbage shift.
