Kabul, March 24 (IANS): Thousands of demonstrators on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest in Afghan capital Kabul, calling on the government to bring to justice those responsible for lynching a woman for allegedly burning a copy of the Quran.
On Thursday, 27-year-old Farkhunda was beaten to death and her body was set on fire by a group of people who accused her of burning a copy of the holy Quran.
The demonstrators chanted slogans like "We want justice", "The killers must be hanged", and "Farkhunda is innocent" during the protest which was held near the country's Supreme Court building in central Kabul, Xinhua news agency reported.
On Monday, a commission assigned by Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani began its work to thoroughly investigate the case, according to a statement issued by the presidential palace.
The protestors dispersed peacefully later in the day.
