Bengaluru, Jun 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi may go out of the way to promote yoga in the country and abroad but not in Karnataka.

The International Yoga Day being observed on June 21 at the behest of Modi-led NDA regime, is not mandatory for schools and colleges in the State.

Unlike CBSE directive to schools, the State Government would not issue a circular or directive to schools or pre-university colleges to celebrate International Day of Yoga on June 21, following a declaration by the United Nations.

Karnataka’s Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar has made it clear that, “I am not bothered about celebration of Yoga Day. It is left to the individual schools to take their own decision."

The minister declared that the State Government would not enforce Yoga Day in the educational institutions in the State on June 21.

The Education Department would not issue any circular directing government/aided or private schools to celebrate the event on Sunday (June 21).

He also clarified that yoga is optional schools in the State.

However, the Department of Higher Education in the State has issued a circular directing all colleges and universities to celebrate Yoga Day.

Teaching and non-teaching staff and students of all government, aided and un-aided colleges and universities have been directed to organise yoga programmes, as per the directive issued by the Higher Education Department.
