Kankanady Station is henceforth Mangalore Junction

DHNS

Mangalore Oct 26:
Finally the Railways has opened its eyes and has put an end to all the complication related to the names of the two railway stations in Mangalore. Mangalore and Kankanady railway stations will no more called so, instead they have been renamed as Mangalore Central and Mangalore Junction respectively, informed a press release from Bharatiya Janata Party here on Thursday.

According to the release, BJP had noted the problem that worried many a passenger, and had brought it into the notice of the railways five years ago. The requests from various quarters have yielded results at last.
The Southern Railway has forwarded a message regarding the renaming of the stations to Mangalore MP Sadananda Gowda and Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwara Rao.

The name change will come into effect with the official publication in the gazette.

It may be recalled that the BJP had undertaken various struggles for the cause and even on Wednesday, the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry had staged a hunger strike pressing this demand.

It is great to note at long last Kankanady Rly. Stn. has got its real, functional readily identifiable name. But so far as the good old Mangalore Stn is concerned, it would have been more appropriate to rename it as Mangalore Terminus since its main tracks end at a cutting in the aged hills. Since its start Mangalore had been a terminus for the erstwhile South Indian Railway (SIR) and later on for Southern Railway (SR). Mangalore Central would be a misnomer as this Station is not Central in any sense of the word. Nevertheless, even if it is too late to reconsider this issue, the sucess of the local bodies in getting the Railways to rename the two Stations befitting their functional nomenclatures is laudable. Congratulations.

I hope the Railway authorities will improve the pathetic state of Mangalore Junction. Change of name alone is not sufficient. Passengers are put to inconvenience due to poor station management.

yes,it's heartening to hear mangalore central and junction. But let not Matsyagandha train ply through Mangalore junction,it should come to Mangalore central for the benefit of coastal commuters.

I agree with Mr.Sukumar Talpady's views. Passangers comforts at Mangalore Junction Station and approach road to that station must be improved, top priority should be given to this matter now onwards and also Railway counter staff should be Kannadigas so that there should not be any communication problem with passangers and railway counter staff.

It is a good news to all Mangalorians. They have succeeded after many struggles and follow ups. It is not enough if the name is changed to Mangalore Junction. Passenger comforts should be improved at Mangalore Junction Station and not only that the approach road to that station must be improved and well lighted. Mangaloreans should not stop with this.

Their main demand i.e. inauguration Mangalore-Bangalore train should be done as early as possible. Further the counter staff should be Kannadigas who can talk with the passengers freely . These two demands must be met with as early as possible, and struggle should not be stopped or diluted till then.

This is good news and these two names sounds good and people can remember easily. One more subject is pending i.e. Demanding for seperate MANGALORE DIVISION under SWR Zone(South Western Railway Zone)HQ at HUBLI, Karnataka, parting from PALGHAT DIV.KERALA(Southern Railway Zone, HQ at Chennai).
