Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (RD)

Udupi, Oct 26: At the backdrop of globalization, Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are essential for the progress of our country.  However, the irony of the government that they do not pay enough consideration, to rehabilitate those who are displace owing to land acquisition and to provide employment opportunities to the victims, said Dr Norbert Lobo, professor of department of economics, St Aloysius College.

He was delivering lecture on SEZ during Dr P Gururaj Bhat Memorial Endowment Lecture, held at Milagres College, Kallianpura near here recently.

SEZ set up in the populated areas would only benefit the urban residents.  Moreover if SEZs are set up in the remote villages would bring about economic progress and social justice to the rural residents, he opined.

Milagres College principal Fr Fred Mascarenhas, in his presidential address, said that the historical research undertaken by Dr Gururaj Bhat should serve as inspiration to youth.  Moreover, there lies the need to compile all the research undertaken by Dr Bhat and put together in one book.

Prof G S Ramachandra who instituted the scholarship in memory of Dr Gururaj Bhat graced the occasion.  Prof Hilda Rodrigues, head of department of Humanities and Prof Jayaram Shettigar, were present.  Nazeer Mohammed welcomed.  Deepa proposed vote of thanks.  Sonali compered the programme.
