Mangalore, Oct 27: A function was organized by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy at Tulu Academy Hall here on Friday, October 26.

Speaking on the occasion eminent writer and critic Amrutha Someshwara emphasized on the need for Tulu writers to broaden their outlook by working on a wide spectrum of subjects instead of being confined to a few genre of literature.

Someshwara lamented the fact that although languages in general have made great strides in the field of literature, writings in Tulu, are sadly confined to only selected subjects like in novels, drama, poems, short stories, etc.

Glorifying the essence of Tulu language he declared “Linguists have identified Tulu as the most beautiful and grammatically sophisticated among the languages of the Dravidian family”. According to him the true worth of a language can be identified from its high quality literature. Hence, he exhorted Tulu writers and scholars that it will be good for them to think and work on that front.

Further, he felt that the rich religious tradition of Tulu Nadu could by itself provide precious subject matter to such literature in Tulu. However, he cautioned that any venture in this direction demands an aptitude for research and close observation of the events that occurred in the past. Young writers and scholars should accept this as a challenge and do wonders, he advised.

With an aim to motivate budding Tulu writers to concentrate on developing Tulu as an academic and classical language, he said that a language could become rich in a truly literary sense, provided they touch the emotions and awakens the wisdom of people through their writings.

Another journalist to speak on the occasion was M Rathnakumar who had presented a paper on ‘P S Rao’s contributions to Tulu dramas and Tulu journalism’. He spoke about the contributions made to Tulu dramas and Tulu journalism, the development of Tulu journalism in DK and the role of Tulu magazine ‘Tulu Bolli’ being published by Rao.

Several writers and scholars were felicitated on the occasion prominent among them being senior Tulu scholar Adyar Mahabala Shetty, journalist P S Rao and writer Gangadhar Kidiyoor.
