Mangalore, Oct 30: Merely acquiring education is not enough, one need to impart skill oriented, value-based education to students, declared vice chancellor of Mangalore University, Dr K M Kaveriappa here on Monday October 29.

Speaking after inaugurating the P G student’s council at the University campus in Mangalagangotri, Kaveriappa stated that only around 7% to 9% of youth in India are able to have access to higher education as compared to 20% in other countries. Hence the need of the hour is to have at least 1,000 universities and 60,000 colleges by 2015. Further he urged that the curriculum should be improved to match the existing standards of the society, along-with maintaining the quality education he added.

“Youth power in India is booming. In this era of great competition from all quarters of life, the student councils have a very important role to play”, pointed out IGP (Western Range) A M Prasad. On the other hand Ullal constituency MLA U T Khader who was the guest of the day, reminisced about his own youthful days as a student and advised students not to damage the honour of their University. Exhorting students, he declared that the future of the country is in their hands and they should work towards the security and unity of the nation, in-order to reach the highest position.

Registrar Dr K Sundar Naik speaking on the occasion said “A mental, physical, moral, ethical and spiritual strength is necessary for a comprehensive development of one’s personality” As the world is changing it is important for the current generation to change its mindset, and work hard. A hardworking person is sure to get good results for his efforts, he added.

Cultural secretary Karunakar Balkur, director of student welfare council prof K Chinnappa Gowda, student’s council president Umesh R Yadav and general secretary Lavanya were present.
