Bangalore: Atul in Police Custody; yet to be formally arrested

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jun 18: Sleuths belonging to the Udupi District Crime Intelligence Bureau have taken custody of Atul Rao relating to the death of Padmapriya's under suspicious circumstances. They have been interrogating him.

The Delhi police, who had taken Atul Rao in their possession after the reported suicide of Padmapriya, handed over Atul to their Karnataka state counterpart on Monday night. Atul was brought by the Udupi policemen by air to Bangalore. He has since been brought to Udupi, where investigations are on. However, the police are tightlipped over the place where he has been held.

The police have clarified that Atul has not been arrested. They are examining the specific legal provisions under which he should be arrested. He has been lodged in an undisclosed place for the sake of his security, they claim. The family has been kept abreast of this information, the police have informed. State Director General of Police K R Srinivasan too has confirmed that Atul is safe.

In the meanwhile, Atul's wife Meera has filed a habeas corpus application in the high court, naming the Udupi police inspector, home department secretary and the district superintendent of police as defendants. She has said in the applications, that Atul, who has gone missing since June 14, has not yet been produced before any court.

It has come to light, that the name of Atul Rao finds a place in the case against Joseph Chacko, who has been charged with duping non-resident Indians(NRI).Atul Rao, who was instrumental in bringing together several NRIs as a representative of some members of Crown Plaza Owners Association, had filed a case against Chacko at Hennur police station. It is said, Atul later negotiated with several NRIs and struck a compromise with them to withdraw their complaints. Two of the NRIs have, through an application made to the state High Court, contradicted Atul's claim that they had issued power of attorney in his favour. The case is in the highcourt as of now.

Menawhile, Karnataka State Human Rights Commission has asked the state government to file a report relating to Padmapriya's murder. Home Minister V S Acharya has informed the journalists who met him, that the investigation into Padmapriya's death will be conducted with due diligence, without resorting to any cover up. The guilty if any in the case, will face punishment, he reiterated.

Latest News: It is gathered, that the Udupi police have taken Atul Rao to Bangalore on Tuesday evening for being produced in High Court where a habeas corpus petition has been filed by Atul's wife.

In the meantime, it is learnt that a team comprising of Dakshina Kannada District Crime Intelligence Bureau(DCIB) inspector Jayant Shetty, Udupi district DCIB inspector Srinivas Raju and Bangalore City Crime Intelligence Bureau assistant commissioner of police Jitendranath, which has collected all the relevant papers of the case including the ones furnished by the Delhi police,  will start official investigation into the death of Padmapriya at Udupi from today.

Please dont expect the truth to come out unless the case is handed over to the C.B.I. The whole investigation done by Udupi \ Bangalore Police seems to be a bad joke.I am sure people are intelligent enough to figure it out.

No, there is no such law. I am surprised by your ignorance. Helping another person (there is no proof he kidnapped her. How can anyone kidnap a person and take her in public transport and in a flight to Delhi!!) is not a crime. His or her married status does not come into picture. How do you think he kept her hypnotised throughout their journey from Mangalore to Goa to New Delhi???

With due sympathies to Mr.Atul i feel he is being fixed simply becoz he helped a friend (in this case it was Padmapriya)and wife of a shrewd politician. Can a grown up adult, a mother of two, a business woman that who manages a finance company be hypnotised? She was definitely a bold woman to take a drastic step as to live her life on her own. Netizens stop sympthasing with anybody just becoz he is some XYZ. and the person is some influential person. Imagine the circumstances under which late Padmapriya had taken this decision? If all was well at home and the husband was a loving and caring person would she ever take such a drastic step? Agreed he was busy out on some work but for three days he is simply not in touch with the woman of his life?

Even if on day one she went missing had he tried calling her probably she would have changed her mind feeling her importance in the husbands life. No that dint happen even after the elder child tells him. With all the loose talk happening about the duo or rather Raghupati Bhat which women would want to live with such a man? Nowhere it is mentioned that she had an affair with Atul Rao?? Even Raghupati Bhat has gone to the extent saying she was a good lady....and so on.

Then why Mr. Bhat u r trying to blame a third person? Simply because he was ur friend? When she had decided and planned e'thing so well if not Atul she would have taken someone elses help! If Atul or Padma were so very interested only in earthly pleasures why would she leave behind all her credit cards? No where in the constitution has it been written that a male(married or bachelor) cannot help another human being! Lets not forget she was Padmapriya first and then a wife, mother, daughter, sister and in law? Why wasnt she given a fair chance to live? Sincerely pray for a fair trial to Mr. Atul and eternal peace to the soul of Mrs. Padmapriya.

I'm surprised that why Atul still not arrested !!! There is no law to arrest a married man who helped (or kidnapped or hypnotised whatever...) a married woman to runaway from her home to another city ?Really he should be behind the bar.
