Puttur, Jun 21: It has only been about two weeks since vehicles were allowed to ply on Shiradi ghat section of the national highway 48. The public works department and the union minister for road transport had patted themselves on the back for the high quality maintained in restoring and partially rebuilding  this part of the national highway, by asphalting and laying concrete interlocks at several bends on the ghat section which were prone to heavy damage, within a comparatively short period.

The asphalting of the road has started peeling off, laying bare the fakeness of the claim of high quality. The concerned had claimed to have spent Rs 5 crore for asphalting 11 kms of the road and another 22 crores for a stretch of 26 kms. However, the roads would have not cracked up as it has now, and rain water would not have got seeped and stored in these cracks, if so much sum had been actually spent. The drivers of buses moving on this road fear, that the road might become unmotorable within a couple of weeks, if the same trend continues. The road is facing highest danger from thousands of heavily loaded ore trucks that make use of this stretch to reach Mangalore.

The fact that exhaustive repairs and restoration works had been taken up by blocking traffic on the road for nearly eight months, had given rise to high expectations among the people about the quality of this road. The elation of the people  who were tired of undertaking treacherous jounrey through the damaged roads of Charmadi ghat to reach Bangalore, at the time this road was opened for traffic, will perhaps be shortlived. What can they expect from a road that was claimed to have a long life of three to five years, crumbling under traffic pressure within two weeks?

Our politicians, contractor's who paid huge amount of money for party fund are responsible for bad quality of work. Our planning team's dream to reshape our metro's as Shanghai. We can only dream but only it happens when our elected representatives start thinking like real patriotic.

My cousin, a frequent visitor of China, he is astonished by dramatic development of urban and rural China. Our representatives to come out from their so called political egoism and act like real statesman.

In some countries, especially in the gulf, any road or public works contractor is paid only half the money once the work is completed and the balance half after one year provided the work done remains intact. This should be done by every state government. But then I feel like a member of the rats group discussing as to "Who will Bell the Cat"

AGREED. The ghat section roads cannot be renovated often. It's almost a lifetime job. These results should be considered as FRAUD, UNACCEPTABLE, PUNISHABLE. The good professionals in the segment are kept away from these issue by the hungry Chair-persons. From renovation of the roads to the improvisation of the Airport(Esp.Bajpe)we are unfortunate / deprived.

I totaly agree with Jerry Moras, What I had to say he explained in cent percent understanding way. State Government should try to dig out how many vehicles purchased and personal bank deposits these stupid contractors made after they could get this very huge importatnt contract.

I really pity on Shiradi Ghat Road. Is our public works department and the union minister for road transport SLEEPING ?. Come on, it's already morning.

What is important is not politicians but quality of contractors you get in India to handle the job. Prequalification is not handled properly and funds being not utilized as required. Poor management, inadequate method of handling of the job.

Give peanuts you get monkeys such is status of India. Do you expect quality job when you have chosen to handle job with non-professional job handlers ? First of all prerequisites (thickness of the road, material construction to be understood clearly for that climatic condition / weather so on ) before talk of about situation.

I really pity those jokers who become fools in front of Indian citizens. India exports to overseas only quality personnel and fails to retain handle such these people who handle substandard jobs... I only can wish good luck for those guys...

We the people are the fools to elect such politicians knowing fully well that their aim is not to serve but to get rich quickly. Its a pity that the educated do not vote in India but are quick to criticise and complain when such things happen. Educated people should VOTE! and vote the correct people into power so that there is genuine progress and tax payers money is REALLY spent on development.

The public should be informed with wide publicity whether ALL the terms and conditions as enumerated in the PWD manual for road reconstruction/repairs have been strictly adhered to, by the contractor/s. And if so, why is it that the deterioration in the road has taken place in but 3 months.

Name the contractor/s,name the person incharge fom the Govt side who was responsible for supervising the work name the person/s who cleared the bills advise the public the quantum already paid/ kept back for shoddy/defective worktell the public what are the penalties that will be imposed on the contractor/s. With democracy, there must be transparency. And with transparency there must be accountability. We the people must know where our taxes are going- for the work or into pockets.

One minister of a third world country was invited by a western minister and given a grand welcome party. When asked how he managed such a grand party, the minister from the west, took him to the window and shown newly built bridge across the river and asked “do you see that bridge? Only 10%”. Inspired by the greatness of the western minister, he invited that very same minister to his country and gave a much greater welcome party. When asked the secret, he too directed the western minister to the window and shown the river and said “only 100%”. (Shiv Khera –Living with Honour.) If you ask a politician the answer will be this is due to heavy rain, as though it rains only in India.

We tax payers are at the mercy of politicians and beurocrats. God save our country. One day I was discussing with my Emirati friend who is a businessman about IT growth in Bangalore for which he cooly replied me that India doesnot have quality roads in Bangalore. Had he seen NH 17 & 48, he would have made fun of me. We all taxpayers should collectively protest and should not pay tax for a year until the scenario changes. Our politicians are interested in getting rich quick and not at all bothered about our welfare.

No doubt, India is making allround progress. Shiradi Ghat Road is an example for it. We are blessed by able politicians and efficient, honest contractors who prove that we are able to prove quality in work. The Union Minister for road transport and the PWD praised each other for the quality of work achieved on Shiradi Ghat Road. We hope to see that this great work finds a worthy place in the Guinnes Book of World Records.
