Mangalore, Jun 25:
The city civic authority embarked on a demolition drive against illegal pavement vendors and petty shops located near State Bank bus stand here, at 10 am on Tuesday, June 24.

Workers, accompanied by policemen, equipped with earthmovers and trucks arrived fully prepared to clear the pavement and streets of vegetables and other sundry items that were displayed for sale.  It was all dumped into waiting trucks along with the petty shops that are a hindrance to traffic and pedestrians alike.

Although the civic administration has been undertaking such surprise drives frequently, they are back in business at the same place, the very next day. Though the vegetable vendors from the outskirts of city have been engaged in the trade since many decades, the city authorities have neither provided them an alternate site to carry out their trade nor accommodated them anywhere in the nearby municipal market.

The women vendors represented by their union have been urging the local civic body to meet their demands for a long time now.

Not a good act by MCC, poor vendors are the target of this. How can a country grow this way its corruption all over and these poor people are the target of every crime. The government has to change atleast not this way, corrupt people in the government offices should be taken into action eating money for no reason. I am sure this act must be done with somebodys "PROMOTION" in the office in MCC. God forbid MCC for doing this cruel act, atleast give them a chance dont take there tears???

We only hear of the demolition. No one talks of the rehabilitation. Where will these poor and innocent vendors go? After all their structures are movable or usually dismantled end of the day. MCC should target the permanent structures built by the rich and famous.

This is heineous crime by the MCC against the poor people without giving them the altenative. Are the MCC is puppet of MNC retail chain of vendors? What about the buildings which are constructed close to road side. Honest Commissioner like Bharat Lal Minha has been transferrd not even completed his tenure of one year service in Mangalore. Without taking care of these poor vendors and their families, the MCC demolition drive is nothing but demolishing the homes of poor vendors.

Now MLA election is over, we are sure nobody will take up these vendors grievances.

This is utter nonsense !! MCC should start it’s action from the top first. Why don’t they take action against those building owners who have occupied pavements illegally? Why don’t take action against buildings without proper parking facilities? What are you going to achieve by taking action against poor street vendors? Do you know because of your silly actions how many poor families going suffer? Think about their children. If you really want do something why do you build a open market yard for street vendors charging daily fees? Please stop this thing. Unless you find solution to the problem, you can’t finish the problem.

why can't Civic authorities take similar actions on builders who cause all the trouble to everyone in city especially present contruction at KSR road, the Mall at MG road which was built insuch way that for 100 years the road is congested. May be the answer is big bucks!!. Poor street vendors are earning for their daily bread how can they give any bucks to Civic authoritis. I don't think Citizens have any problems with street vendors. Common guys have some common sense arrest the bad builders and architects

As righty said by the lady in kadri....The Municipality comes with a big bang once/twice a year and takes away the belongings of the poor. Their plight is pathetic ! Where do these raided goods end up ? The MCS staff hosues/kitchen ? Understandable that the occupation is illegal but why aren't the authorities not keeping a vigil 24/7 ? What are they paid for ? Sleeping in the offices and take the salary out of tax-payers' money for working just 2 days a year ? If MCS is disciplined, there is no nead for raids ! The poor will settle where it is legal to settle ! MCS breaks the law first as a result of which the poor to break it - this is a semultaneous preocess !

MCC officials to me it looks like your pantry is empty and your wives must b harassing for a good fetch and hence this initiative? Why dont you guys go and beg with the hawkers for your daily supply and spare them from looting of thier stock.

Probably it could be the lobby of the wholesalers, retailers and the upcoming trend of departmental stores where veggies and fruits are sold for a higher price? We are a civilised society. There are several other ways to have things moving. You know these vendors and hawkers mushroom the very next day, call for a talk and see what best you can workout for the convenience of the vendors, hawkers and pedestrians. Now talking about inconvenience. I remember during my college days and even now the city buses park there for more than 15 mins or so... What action is the RTO and the Traffic police initiating against these offenders? After all its the road and not the parking bay for public buses to park thier vehicles for hours together.

At the most buses should allow their passengers to alight and board and refrain from using the public road as a parking bay? Is such inconvenience not a botheration for the authorities? Or is it all concerned are involved in lobbying against the poorest with the might of the richest?

There are many multi storied commercial buildings in Mangalore. Most of them do not have parking space in them. The tenants in those buildings park vehicles on the roadsides increasing road congestion. When will the MCC solve the problem.

Why do the civic authorities allow, the street vendors to flourish and when they have evicted them, why do they allow them to come back. don't they have enoguh staff to keep a check on the situation. There are many shops that have encroached and built part of their shops on the pavements or streets. Why are these not being demolished. Some people have even commercialised the parking lot under the building.

I agree with what MCC is doing. There is no solution to it. There should be some norm and emotions won't work at point of time. It is the way how city is set-up and trading regulatons are handled. At the same time, if someone wants to gain profit, name from business point of veiw (super markets, grocery stores) as plans could be possible, then it is bad for a common person to make living. Simultanously, alternative plans should have been thought by MCC then thier actions are justfied. Else it is mere foolishness to handle situation in this way. I think public has right to oppose.

Eviction of vendors is a old news!! Someone wants to justify his position at the MCC. The city planning never gets closer but on the drawing board. All are qualified till the positions are offered and make the life miserable who genuinley support their families. Every building is closer to the roadside. Still the permits are approved and the roads are narrowed. Trasportaion mode is like the cattle walkers. There is even no SCHOOL CROSSING sign for the school children to cross the road. With so much of education no sherpherds in the Mangalore City? It is a shame.

MCC doing "Eviction Drive against Street Vendors" for every 30 days. I am sure they can not solve the issue unless they provide them proper free market place. There are so many illegal constructions in mangalore. But MCC is blind on those folks...Again money talks!!!

City fathers do not consider the need of road widening and allow new and new constructions roadside. Perhaps money plays the part in issuing licence. Thus the well to do are allowed to flourish business and the poor people's fate is further doom. Let them give preference t o road widening first.
