Mangalore, Jun 26: Drugs were not a major cause of concern in the city about two decades ago.  But the number of drug addicts is increasing at a rapid phase in the last few years. Today drug abuse is closely related to youth community, said Dr Ravish Thunga, well-known psychiatrist of the city.

Addressing the ‘Monsoon Rally’ against drug abuse, organized by LINK De-addiction and Rehabilitation centre, to mark International Day against Drug Abuse on Thursday June 26, he said that if the youth suffer, whole country suffers along with them. Therefore the youth should keep themselves away from drugs, he advised.

Drug addiction ruins the self-esteem of a person, drains finances, wrecks one's health and affects social status.  One may be hooked to drugs out of curiosity.  It is not impossible but difficult to come out of drug addiction. Therefore, one should say ‘no’ to drugs, before touching it, he added.

T J Thomas, director of LINK centre, said that drugs have not improved the life of anyone but it has created a lot of problems in the personal and family life of the addicted.

MLA Yogish Bhat asserted that even the highly qualified persons have gone astray owing to drug addiction. Hence one should seek services of de-addiction in the initial stage itself, he opined.

DySP N Chandrashekhar administered the oath not to consume drugs at all to students on the same occasion. Former Mayor Judith Mascarenhas presented memorandum to the government, through Deputy Commissioner, urging to enforce ban on drugs in all the places.

Earlier college students of various institutions held the rally through the city and shouted slogans against drugs. The rally that began from Balmatta, passed through Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, Hampankatta and culminated at Nehru Maidan.

Dear T.S.Thomas, Is it not a waste of time dragging the students to the streets. These rallys, bundhs and strikes what values they carry. I agree what Santhosh Hegde who says, I quote"This is just a platform for some professionals like to promote their new institutions". If at all this has to be done, it has to be done at family level.

Parents, take care of your young and adult. Advise them, teach them values, relationships. Dont spoil them by loose freedom. Check their timings, keep watch on them, put time tables and descipline. Why simply blame the institutions? The young and adult depict family values and especially their parents. God Bless you

"Once an Alcoholic, Always an alcoholic" is a slogan normally used by Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A) to assert that Alcoholism is just like Diabetics, which is incurable. Once a person get alcoholism, it remains in his body and so, he can never get "cured", but can only "stay away" from it.

It is a technical issue, which many people misunderstand. Alcoholism or any drug addiction is an incurable disease. De-addiction centers only de-addict them and help them to live a sober life, which is also made possible by world wide fellowships like A.A.

Well, all are worried the Drug addicts are increasing alarmingly, but how? Is it because of the luxuries we opt for? Though we all know the consequences of consuming harmul drugs still the consumers are increasing be it knowingly or unknowingly the consequences. But why? Is it because the parents, thinking that they will give their best to their children by giving excess money than the child need perhaps? If you ask me, by giving excess money we do more harm than good to them.

Now a days there is no value for money. When I was young, to get 10 rupees I had to listen 100 rupees worth from my dad. After giving me a big lecture, he use to give me atleast 5 rupees in the end. And because of this today I know the value of money. And today the parents give much more than what the siblings need and ask for thinking, the more money they give their children are more comfortable without realizing it consequences.

The child do not know what to do when he has more money in his pockets than he need. And the child spends it however he wants and because of this the child fall prey to all these kinds of habits because he do not know the value of the money since he did not earn it. One realizes the value money only when he starts earning it.

Therefore, we should refrain from giving too much luxury to our children at their young age. If we do then automatically these things comes to their mind and once they fall into it and than it is very difficult for them to come out of it and then regretting NO use. Therefore, if we want our children to know the value of the money, give them what they need and not what they want.

It was unfortunate that so called prestegeous colleges like St. Aloysius College "stayed away" from such a public awareness programs on Drug abuse, when the colege is aware about such a menace. Mere accademic exscellence do not make the name of an institution, but also its commitment to fight problems affecting its own students as well.

Surprisingly, many other Church based educational institutions also show this "denial" and insensititvity to such causes with a justification of losing one class hour. If they do not have a drug problem in their campuses, please excuse me. Then, the international Day against Drug abuse will have no relevance for them.

Drug addiction can be a cancerous impact on the society of India. Family dysfunction and family disharmony added with many other communal evils can be directly attributable to the drug desease. Drugs can cause disaster not only to the civilization of India but also hinder all the progress and survival of the younger generation. Drug usage and drug dealing can bring multitudes of dangers to our new generation. Nearly seventy percent of victims in the Prisons of U.S.A. are directly involved with the drug usage and many other consequences cause thereof. The Government as well as the people of India must focus every possible attention for the irradication of drug usage and drug trafficking in India under all circumstances and conditions.

Obviously the students and the organizers should watch their words with such demeaning placards like 'once a alcoholic always alcoholic'. Its a known fact that the people associated with this rally (except for LINK) are not exactly known for their dedication to drug eradication. This is just a platform for some professionals like to promote their new institutions.

The placard "Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic" is appalling! People and Organisations working towards positive results should take care to avoid such negative, demoralising slogans while going in public.

There were hippies roaming around the beaches of India and drug addiction was a common norm. But today drugs are everywhere and college going youth, out of leisure time and fun getting into habits and addiction grows. To days youth, majority of them college going have no other responsibilies and get into fun and frolic to pass time.

Result:unwanted vices. From drugs, alchohol, videogame addiction and the list goes on. There is no way to control this menace unless self control. Yes, public education may help to acertain extent but when it becomes part of culture like the West its not going to go away. Drug addicts are found everywhere in th world from famous musicians to rock concert artists and the drug trade perhaps runs into billions. Yes, say "no" to any addiction substance. This only will kill society unless the youth kill the habit.

I think smoking is equally hazardous so it should be banned. Even innocent passive smokers are suffering.
