Mangalore: Raingod Smiles; Farmers Happy, Woes for Vehicles

Mangalore, Jun 29: The monsoon, which had been weak through out the last couple of weeks, returned with a vengeance, providing with an opportunity for the agriculturists to feel happy. Dakshina Kannada district was drenched with copious rains for the last couple of days and artificial floods were witnessed at a few places in Mangalore, due to improper drainage system.

A few vehicles parked on the side of an open drain in Kottara Chowki in Mangalore slipped into the drain, as the retaining wall of the drain collapsed, reportedly due to the weight of vehicles and force of the flowing water. A few shops and buildings in Kottara were flooded due to the rising levels of water. 

Udupi district too witnessed heavy rainfall. There was no let up for road users, as torrential rains lashed the twin districts without leaving any gap in between. People ventured out of their homes only when extremely necessary and vehicles had to wade through knee deep water at several places.  Puttur received eight cms of rain during the last 24 hours, with Kota and Siddapur in Udupi district registering a rainfall of six cms each. Mulki, Dharmastala, Subrahmanya, Udupi, Karkala and Kundapur received five cms of rainfall.

Heavy rains are predicted during the next two days. People residing on the sea shore have grown more apprehensive of the chances of the sea erosion getting worser with the heavy downpour.
