Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala nurse, who delayed cancer treatment to give birth to eighth child, dies

Daijiworld Media Network - Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 30: A Kerala based nurse who was diagnosed with Cancer, chose to give birth to her eighth child than terminating the pregnancy and opting for treatment, due to her Catholic pro-life beliefs.

Sapna Tracy (43), who worked as a senior nursing officer at the AIIMS in New Delhi, delivered her eighth child in December 2015, and died on Christmas day, December 25 this year in Thrissur after delaying cancer treatment.

Tracy was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was in the third month of her eighth pregnancy. The doctors advised her to terminate the pregnancy and start immediate treatment. They warned that she would orphan her seven other children all below the age of fifteen, if she did not start treatment.

However, she reportedly told the doctor, “Only I can give birth to this child growing in my womb. There are many good-hearted people who can take care of my seven other children,” her husband Chittilappally Joju (50) tells a newspaper.

Mastectomy was performed in the sixth month of pregnancy. Doctors wanted to start radiation therapy and chemotherapy but Tracy agreed to treatment only after delivery.

About a year ago, Tracy was told that the cancer had spread to the lungs. Joju took the entire family — five boys and three girls — to Kerala earlier this year. Joju said he always supported the stand his wife took. “We consider life very precious. We have no right to terminate it. I had no qualms about backing her decision not to abort and start cancer treatment. We could not have saved two lives. I believe population will drive development. Had Tracy been healthy, we would have gone for the ninth child,’’ he reportedly told a newspaper.

The couple had also started counselling the children about Sapna’s health condition and prepared them for their mother’s death.

In their youth the couple were active members of Jesus Youth and Catholic Charismatic Renewal movements. In recent years, both were actively involved in the pro-life movement of the Church, promoting large families and working against abortion.

The Kerala Catholic Church diocese in Faridabad also honoured the couple for having a large family.

Joju serves as a social worker under the Church in the national Capital, while Sapna was the main bread-winner of the family.

Kerala Catholic Bishops Council’s Family Commission Secretary Fr Paul Madassery said the woman’s decision was right and the Church backed her pro-life stand. “God and good-hearted people around them would take care of the children,” he said.

I honestly salute this lady, she was educated, knew the consequences of having more children’s, still did not fear for anything , she was braver than us, we want best the best things to our kids that’s why we want only one or two kids, we believe on our strength, she trusted on Gods strength, we are selfish she was selfless and gave life for a new one. May her soul rest in peace!! And let God bless her all kids.

The husband didn't know wife had cancer before pregnency. The cancer was diagnosed at the third
month of her pregnancy. What a sacrifice to give her life, to give life to her child. God will reward
her abundantly. What if she had died suddenly of some accident or something? Then also her children
would have been orphaned. God gave her a chance to decide and she decided rightly. Please respect
the sacrifice she did and don' t blame her or her husband. God will take care of their children through
good hearted human beings as angels from God.

You commented on the basis of reality which is true on part of poor 8 kids and here we see some comments based on catholic belief which is not suited . India is not a western country where government support larger families through social welfare and grants such as free school and medical etc

    I agree with you Maria, 100 %

If these people had 8 children because their belief promoted it, what about the remaining catholic couples who limited to 2 or just one child ? Was their belief fake ? Prospective Catholic groom/bride is counselled about family planning, well before the marriage is to take place - precisely by church authorities. Is this a waste ? Being a nurse she should have known to avoid pregnancy without using contraceptive - yes, this is possible. Then, she need not have worried about aborting at all !

Moreover, the father is a social worker - he has no regular salary. She was the earning member now not bringing any income. What will the man do ? Marry another woman who will bring home money to look after his children ? Secondly, when others use the facilities for just two or one child, why this family is using it eight times ? They aren't educating their children at home ? Medicines aren't produced at home ? The government plans services keeping in mind two children - not multiple.

Please do not mix faith with your personal compromise because compromise varies family to family but faith is same to all. All other believers are not fools.

She was right about that child in her womb. There is no facility in the world which would have saved that child. People here have commented about having more number of children. But remember once conceived the life is on.

What about those doctors who just squeeze money? We don't have shortage of such doctors in India. So, your advise to follow doctor doesn't seem right. Having number of children is their choice. If they can afford to give them good life, why don't they have 10-12 children. Who told India doesn't have resources? India is rich in resources. Only thing is our politicians eating up our resources and Indians follow their masters even they do blunders.

Commendable family choice I would say. But certainly Pro Life does not mean fostering large families or having more children...ProLife means, rejecting abortion, for life is a gift of God, and if you are against suicides and murders, you should also be against abortion.i think this lady made a choice against a murder. That's all to it. Pro life also means, being responsible Parenthood planning a family you would like by self control on lust, all the while rejecting artificial methods of family planning. That is the way you honor yours as well as spouse's body, respect each other's choices, desires and plans..

Even after educated she gave birth to 8 kids because of her belief system.
This is the reason the great mystic Oscho told that anybody who gives you a belief system is your enemy. This is the real difference between Religion and Spirituality -

The belief system make you slave of others.

What a way of life.., an exemplary life by the Mother (Kerala Nurse) by showing gratefulness towards the gift of God by loving child more than herself.

Can we expect any complement tweets from top political leaders of the country either from ruling and/or from the opposition ...!!!!

There is no better way than showing love, respect & honor towards the eternal gift..., but sadly human is engaged in lynching, killing, cutting, burning, hitting etc.., let us hope news like this will change the human behavior for good & better.

If a family is well to do, to look after how many number of kids they want , why do people have problems. Kids are God's gift. Every person born is by the Will of God.it's not a matter of family planning here. Appreciate the pro life decision she took. To give ones life for another life is a decision only a saint can make.

    Dear brother,

It is not right to take away one life to save another life. That is not Gods plan. Our Almighty Good God knows she has small children. Eighth child is also a God gift to the family.

I appriciate both mother and father of the child. God will take care of the children including the infant.

If we trust God God will do good for us. God surely bless these eight children and father.

For saving the child God will Give reward to our departed Sister. Praise and Thank God for giving such a strong faith to sister Sapna Tracy and brother Joju.
