Udupi, Aug 8: Additional wall of a shop that extended into the gram panchayat land was demolished by Padubidri panchayat on Thursday August 7.

A person named Jagadish Mallya had extended his shop by building a wall illegally in the panchayat land. The gram panchayat had taken a decision to evict the encroachment and issued a notice to Mallya. As he did not budge, gram panchayat secretary Mamata Y Shetty with help from other staff demolished the encroachment.

Mallya at first, threatened to commit suicide if his wall was demolished. Later, after he was convinced of the panchayat action, he cooperated. Other extensions built by various shops too were evicted.

Gram panchayat president Sumitra Devadiga, vice-president Mithun R Hegde and others were present. The locals have urged the panchayat to see beyond the Market Road and extend demolition operations to other areas under the gram panchayat, where encroachments have been rampant.
