Udupi: Government Mulls over Health Insurance Scheme for Teachers

Udupi, Aug 14: State education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri has informed that the government has realized that the teachers are put to hardships because of the meager medical assistance for which they are eligible to, for some specific kinds of ailments. Therefore, in order to help all the teachers of the state to affectively face this problem, the government proposes to cover them under group health insurance scheme, he added.

He was speaking after inaugurating the district-level education conference organized under the aegis of the Udupi District High School Headmasters and PU College Principals Association in the city on Wednesday August 13. The government is prepared to contribute a part of the group insurance premium for this purpose and the teaches will also have to bear a part of the premium, he explained.

The minister explained that that he wants to make education department more and more transparent in stages, to ensure that it is free from any corruptive practices. The department also wants to provide basic amenities to teachers besides removing ambiguities in the service rules. The government also wants to lay stress on value based subjects in school texts, he stated.

The minister invites suggestions from the people for the improvement in the department operations, particularly the retired teachers can come up with ideas backed by their rich experience.  The government wants to bring some changes in the examination process from the next year onwards. The parents should help the nation by stopping the brain drain in which the youth educated here, contribute to the progress of other countries, Kageri pleaded.

Retired teachers, talented students and heads of institutions that have recorded good results, were felicitated on the occasion. Local MLA Raghupati Bhat presided.
