Udupi, Aug 15: Private bus services resumed on Friday, August 15, as the coastal bus employees association called off its indefinite bus strike of both express and city bus services on Thursday evening.

The stir was called off following talks between home minister Dr V S Acharya, and superintendent of police in-charge M B Nagaraj, with office-bearers of  the bus employees' association which was held at circuit house here, on Thursday evening.

Vijay, president, coastal bus employees’ association, stated that the minister had assured of  compensation to the injured bus driver and conductor, as well as initiating necessary measures to take custody of the miscreants who assaulted them. He said that a case of attempted murder would be filed against them.

Meanwhile, the association expressed regrets for the inconvenience caused to commuters due to their strike. The strike was called for following the district administration's inability to arrest the miscreants who assaulted the driver and conductor of a private express bus at Ucchila, a few days ago.

Bus stands and roads were deserted during the strike and auto rickshaw and maxi-cab operators fleeced the passengers with exorbitant fares. Schools and colleges were given a holiday and most offices were deserted.

Why do such incidents happen in the first place? Has the minister thought about this. It is only because the law and order machinery has broken down and not functioning fairly.
