Mangalore: Compost Plant to Start Functioning from Today

Mangalore, Aug 16: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) will begin using the first solid waste compost plant and scientific sanitary landfill site at Vamanjoor from Saturday, according to Sameer Shukla, Commissioner of the corporation. Solid waste generated within the corporation limits will be stored at the Vamanjoor yard for a specified number of days.

Cow-dung slurry will be sprayed on it and organic compost pr oduced from degradable waste. Inert waste such as plastic, metals and glass pieces will be separated with a machine. Later, the inert waste will be dumped at the sanitary landfill site. The Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Development Corporation has built these facilities for the corporation.
