Bengaluru, May 15: Addressing a press meet here on Monday May 14, chairman of Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Authority (KERC), M K Shankaralinge Gowda,announced that electricity supply companies have been permitted to hike electricity tariff by 20 paise to 60 paise per unit with effect from April 1 this year. The hike had been put off pending the assembly election in the state which was held on Saturday.
Gowda stated that for each unit of domestic consumption in Bengaluru city area, the rate hike would be 28 paise while the increase is 25 paise per unit in rural and town areas. On an average, 5.93 percent increase has been permitted, he stated.
The increase in power rate will be in the range of 20 to 30 paise per unit in industrial areas. "Concession of two rupees per unit has been extended for electricity used from 10 pm to 6 am. For commercial consumption, the hike will be 25 to 30 paise per unit. For power consumption towards water supply, increase will be 15 paise per every unit," he explained.
Gowda said that till the end of October, farmers would be provided with power for three hours during the day and three hours at night. "The government is yet to take a decision about the desirability to sanction subsidy for people using pump sets illegally. The government had been approached with a request to provide Rs 11,000 crore by way of subsidy, but the it has released Rs 8,000 crore," he stated.
He clarified that for power supplied by Bescom in rural areas, the hike will be 25 paise per unit, while uniform price hike of 25 paise has been affected for power consumers falling under Mescom, Jescom, Hescom, and Chescom. He said that Bescom had submitted proposal seeking permision to increase power tariff by 82 paise per unit, Mecom had asked for 1.23 rupees, Chescom 1.13 rupees, Hescom 1.23 rupees, and Chescom 1.62 rupees. "To encourage railway, BMRCL will get power at the rate of six rupees per unit, by reducing the price by 40 paise per unit," he stated. He said that Karnataka, which produces 4,500 mega watts of solar power, stands first in the country in this segment.
