Mangaluru: BJP decimates Congress in Dakshina Kannada, wins 7 out of 8 seats

Mangaluru, May 15: Congress which had a stronghold in the twin coastal districts of coastal Karnataka for the past five years was decimated, with BJP winning seven out of eight seats in Dakshina Kannada and all five seats in Udupi.

In Dakshina Kannada, the BJP won all the seats, with only Congress candidate U T Khader holding on to his Ullal constituency by almost 20,000 votes.

J R Lobo who had won the 2013 elections by over 12,000 votes suffered a defeat by over 15,000 votes at the hands of debutant BJP candidate Vedavyas Kamath.

Soon after the victory, BJP candidate Vedavyas Kamath thanked the people of Mangaluru South constituecny."They showed their faith in me and I am dedicating this victory to them. This is their victory. I have many development plans for the city of Mangaluru and in the coming days I will work on it. We had released a special manifesto for Mangaluru and we will work on it," he said.

In Mangaluru North, Mohiuddin Bava lost to Bharath Shetty, who was seen as weak candidate. Bava garnered 57,551 votes against Bharath Shetty's 86,544.

Bantwal which was considered a stronghold of the Congress, with Ramanath Rai being MLA for the past 6 terms, saw BJP register a massive win, with Rajesh Naik amassing 87,444 votes.

Beltangady and Moodbidri too went to BJP, where Congress lost by huge margins of over 20,000 votes again.

BJP has been fighting hard to regain its foothold in the Mangaluru South constituency. In 2013, Congress managed to break Yogish Bhat’s 20-year winning streak by fielding J R Lobo as its candidate. Lobo won with a margin of over 12,000 votes causing major embarrassment to BJP which later pointed to internal conflicts as reason for defeat.

The BJP has managed to win 7 seats out of 8 in Dakshina Kannada. BJP's Bharath Shetty won from Mangaluru North, Umanath Kotian from Moodbdri constituency, S Angara from Sullia, Rajesh Naik from Bantwal and Sanjeev Matandoor from Puttur who defeated Shakuntala Shetty.

Speaking to daijiworld, Sanjeev Matandoor said, "This is BJP workers’ victory. With the aim of bringing BJP in power, they worked day and night. So this is their time to rejoice. They received a positive result for their commitment and dedication.

"Modi factor also worked behind my victory and all other BJP constituencies. People accepted his vision and mission of development. Hindutva also played its own role in the victories of BJP candidates.

"People showed their anger against Siddaramaiah in this election. The killing of Hindu activists made them think twice and they decided that Congress is an anti-Hindu party. Hence, we won this election with a big margin," he said.

Accepting defeat Congress’ Shakuntala Shetty said, "I never expected this defeat. I cannot understand how people forgot the developmental works of the Congress government. Now I am in confusion thinking whether people want development or Hindutva or any other thing. Nevertheless, I accept the result. But the margin of defeat paves way to think about manipulation in EVM," he said.

As soon as results were clear, the BJP camp broke out in celebrations. Though victory parades have been banned by the EC on the day of the counting, the party workers and supporters celebrated by distributing sweets and rejoiced chanting slogans hailing the party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rahul's campaign was only about modi's 15 laks, 2 crore jobs & Jay Shah nothing else not once but in each & every rally he did took the same matter, everyone got bored seeing him live or on tv blabbering the same issues, not once he had said what is his developmental projects for Karnataka on the other hand Modi campaigned brilliantly in each and every rally he changed the issues which were related to their districts... that's why you can see a change in electoral in each district

No matter whatever the results, until and unless, Election commissioner cancels EVM and brings back ballot papers, the election results will always a mystery.

Entire Karnataka, and many parts of India have openly raised suspicion. Udupi results itself is the proof. How can Madwaraj can loose with a difference of 15,000 is a big mystery.

I fully agree with your Harold Sir. Otherwise How this Green Party gets 78 seats. We were all along with you expecting Congress route and never expected more than 10 Seats. We are also expecting Niddheramayy'as loss in both the constituencies. Se how he won in one constituency and how Green party won in rest of 77 seats. As you know we also agree with that Green Party has got help from EVM's.

Its generally the minority community which feels insecure and votes against the party which it feels a threat to their existence even over development. But its rare that a majority community does so.
But there are historical evidences that this has happened . It happenned in 1930's in Germany when majority of Germans were made to feel insecure over a minority of affluent but hard working jews.

Coastal Karnataka choose Hindutva over development.... In coming days goondagiri enabled by polarised voters will affect not only minorities but also them... No wonder why people here entertain Gau and Gober more than Government...
Cong loosers don't blame EVM ... I knew how RSS was campaigning from past few months...It was only about Hindutva and how congress was anti Hindu party..seems like this self imposed paranoia "Hindu khatre main hai" narrative works well in coastal Karnataka eventhough voters are educated unlike North...

I didn't endorse any party or community to go soft on Hindutva sanghi elements and accommodate them ...Infact they should oppose and fight against it more now... If majority of the people endorse any extremist party that doesn't mean it is legit and other people should follow it....It just shows the mentality of the people who feel happy when minorities are harassed... I particularly despise NRI bhakts who happily earn in a secured environment in foreign countries where there is no riots and lynch mobs but want a regressive regime here for minorities ...

Last time we gave chance to Congress without seeing caste or religion of Congress Candidates because almost all were angry with BJP but in return what did we get Murder of our Youths, Conversion Hindu Girls, Fake Cases on Hindu Youths & Leaders.

We had defeated BJP but RSS always had a place in our heart arrogant Congress Leaders went outside the Lakshman Rekha only to try to book Hindu leaders & youths we were pished to wall.

We had no option so we had to defeatveven J R Lobo who had been humble & decent.

We defeated Congress not Lobo & it is only because of Ramanath Rai, Moideen Bawa & Abhayachandra Jain kind of arrogant MLA's. Hope next BJP do good for city also dear Congress don't try to push Hindus to wall they will hit you back so hard and will hit you at place where it hurts.
    Also to Ramanath Rai " ರಾಮನ ಕೃಪೆಯಿಂದ ರಾಜೇಶ್ ನಾಯ್ಕರು ವಿಧಾನಸಭೆಗೆ ನಿನು ಮನೆಗೆ". ಇನ್ನು ನೀನು ಈ ಜನ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂಟ್ವಾಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಗೆಲ್ಲಲ್ಲ.

Don't you think Mr. Prakash Rai is totally responsible for Congress decimation?
He has been given more importance by the media than any other Congress politicians. I think he is responsible for this type of result for the ruling party. He said let BJP cross 56" chest meaning 56 seats, now what happened is in front of us. So people should stop Hindu bashing at some point of time. It's easy to bash a peace loving, tolerant, soft target like Hindu society, but there is GOD who is watching all of this. No party can win elections in India without the vote of Hindus. It's a lesson for all so called "SECULAR" parties. No matter if JDS & CONGRESS join together to rule right now, but it pays rich dividend to BJP in the coming polls, it may be Laksabha or Assembly or Bypolls.

I was viewing a debate on ‘ RRahul has been benched for 2019 ‘ in CNN news. There were five panelists out of which four were journalists and one representing BJP. No one from Congress attended the discussion.

Throughout the discussion all the panelists discussed the reasons for the benching of Rahul. Also discussed Sonia's continuing with the leadership. They discussed many names from Congress such as Pilot, Kamalnath, Scindia etc. None raised the name of Mrs. Priyanka. The entire discussion went without mentioning her name. This clearly indicates the importance she enjoys in political circle. Also this tells that she too will end up the same way as her brother. If she is that popular and a natural leader, nobody can stop the raise, just like Modi who could not be stopped even by Advani the tallest leader of BJP. Even if Priyanka takes over, with all her facial resemblance to her grandmother, will not be able to stem the tide of rot that has set in the party.

    Absoulte rubbish...
Five years ago, coastal people voted Congress newcomers like Lobo, Bava ,Pramod etc.. Majority Hindus voted for minority candidates.
People wanted honest and unbiased leaders.

    But what did congress do?
Religious Appeasment and ignored the silent majority. Innocent people were killed for having a different idealogy. Tippu jayanthi.. Cows were stolen from homes and government ignored the sentiments behind it. Culprits were let free. Road name were altered to appease a particular community.
Yes development is important, but the peaceful coastal people want a peacefull life. The tears of mothers were ignnored.
Congress failed to see the writing on the wll.

Lobo, Bava... yes you did good work...but people need honest and unbiased leadership.

The fact that people would vote only based on religion is what worries me. They don't seem to be looking at candidates or their track record.

If Shaadi bhagya was launched so was Shaadi Shagun... But former is termed appeasement and latter empowerment. Fact that majority feel they are insecure inspite of being in absolute majority, baffels me.

Imagine, 2008,many churches were attacked in coorinated manner, well planned execution. Yet 'hindu Katre main hai' narrative seems to reap electoral benefits.

Its like sadistic majority feels pleasure in harassing minorities instead of being appalled, and that worries me.
One last point, can we term - tears of Aqlaq's mother were 'ignored' , when instead of condemning the lynching , a union minister actually attended funeral of the accused.

Let me congratulate all the winning candidates of BJP in Dakshina Kannada as well as Mr. Khader from Congress.

The trend shows that coastal kannadigas more inclining is more incline to hardcore 'Hindutva' politics rather than 'development'. It is no doubt that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh 'silent campaign' was very success in polarising the voters.

Though anti incumbency in Congress Is one of the factor prominent leaders losing the battle. But Congress is also failed as united opposition to taken on BJP's tainted leader in canvassing. If Congress would have pursued the case of RTI activist case and Raghavendra swami disciple rape and murder case the fortune of Congress in entire coastal as well as Malanadu is different. One of the other factor is curbing the 'moral police', 'communal tension' and security business operated by Sangh Parivar member with threat more rigorously.

But this election trend shows that for Coastal Kannadigas development is secondary issue when 'Hindutva' has put forward.

This is the reason Union Minister Ananth Kumar Hegde proudly saying 'Polarisation is part of democracy'. The fact is if voters assured them votes despite hatred it won't be late Karnataka becoming another Uttar Pradesh.
