Mangalore: IGP Unhappy Over Police Action, SP Supportive of Subordinates

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 18: Police circles in the district are understood to be agog with rumours, that the western range inspector general of police (IGP) Ashit Mohan Prasad contributes to some extent to the charges, that the policemen behaved brutally and inhumanly against the Christians who were protesting against the attacks on their centres of faith.

During the said protest, the policemen had resorted to lathi charge and bursting of tear gas shells, after the protestors had pelted stones at them. The policemen had caned the protestors at Kulshekhar Holy Cross Church, Vamanjoor Joseph the Worker church and Tokkottu Permannur St Sebastian Church on Monday morning. The policemen are charged with indiscrimate swinging of their batons, not even sparing the weak and the women. Christian organizations have accused the police of unncecessary and excessive use of force and inhuman behaviour. Reportedly, the IGP expressed his displeasure to the police inspectors who were on the spot, for their excessive use of force against the agitators. The policemen are arguing, that under the circumstances, they had no other option but to use force to control the situation.

However, the police have support from some quarters. DK district superintendent of police Sateesh Kumar, who personally oversaw the situation and moved about in the city assessing the situation and guiding the policemen during the happenings, is said to have supported the action of his juniors. In turn, the policemen have appreciated his leadership skills and efficient handling of the situation. It is also said, that the SP advised the police officers to manage the situation justifiably without too much worrying about the possible allegations of excesses.

There have been complaints that the department did not deploy women police in required numbers to control the women agitators. The police officials say, that they had to use force to control the situation which was threatening to go out of control, although sufficient women police were not present on the spot.

Question to Mr Peter Fernandes I have full respect for anyone in Uniform, be it a soldier, protecting our borders or a Police, guarding our society...How can one tolerate beating a policeman in Uniform? Or for that matter snatching a wireless set? Mr Fernandes, would you like any of that happening to leave alone yourself, your subordinate in uniform?

Santhosh, what Jude saying is right. Though we have not seen the incidents, we have seen the videos, photographs, & heard detailed eyewitnesses. What do u think the SP of DK dist. is dictator? U might be worshipping him but we just respect him & submit to him thats all. If he was a wise man then he should not have feared at the crowd before time. but should have tried to convince the crowd by using loud speakers. only when the police started the lathi chage upon his order then the crowd dispersed & pelted stones. i have read some of ur comments & i percieve that u are also influenced by the spirit of RSS & BD. Real Hinduism is not like RSS & BD santhosh, read bhagavad gita & vedas.

Santosh, these are exactly the comments i expected from you. Most surely you belong to a family of cops and therefore you seem to know very well their workings. So it has finally come to issuing threats to the Mangalorean christians and me and my family. Truth is really bitter and it hurts does'nt it?. Yes i was not in Mangalore, but were you there?.

Did you not see the coverage?. did you not see the pictures of the injured women?. Is this how the servant of the state who takes an oath before the constitution to protect the oppressed behaves?. would you be sitting in Bahrain and issuing threats to me if any one of those women were your wife, mother or sister?. Answer me if you can. At least i would have reacted the same way in support to you as i am doing now to those poor women who are seeking justice, instead of cheering up these cops as you are doing. Remember we do not live in a banana republic.

I hope the SP reads my comments and understands the anger, anguish and pain that we as a people are going through.

Jude, your commect is correct. Police behaved as Bhajrang agent. If they do not obey the master plan, they will get sacked. Higher the magnitude of atrocities, better chance for promotion.

Sateesh Kumar has to support his juniors. What else can he do? He cannot backtrack now as the damage has been done, and if ever he blames his juniors, it will backfire on him, because he was the mastermind behind the assault. what better can you expect from an active member of the Bajrang Dal. Sorry I have to accuse him, but his actions have proven so. In the past we have had SP's like Kempiah, Sial, V.V Bhasher and Dayanand who were feared at the same time respected.

All that Sateesh Kumar had to do was walk across and speak with the protesters and assure them that he would leave no stone unearthed to bring the cuplrits to book, instead of letting his juniors stand next to the Bajrang dal activists who were hurling abuse and thus provoke the crowds. His juniors should have first chased away or arrested the Bajrangis who had gathered near the churches. But sadly this man neither had the will nor the intention. His only aim was to beat the christians into submission, as his masters in Bangalore had ordered him to do so.
