Puttur, Sep 22: The police have cracked the case relating to the mysterious disappearance of Vinaya from Kodimbady near here, on September 14. They have found that Dayanand Poojary, who has a criminal background, murdered her and buried her body at Kumbudelu near Tumbe in Bantwal taluk limits with the help of a friend.

The woman had gone missing, after attending a marriage. The police have, after sustained interrogation, learnt that Dayand Poojary, who had developed very close relationship with Vinaya after marrying her distant relative, had hatched a conspiracy to get hold on her gold ornaments. The policemen got suspicious about his involvement in the disappearance, from the fact that 22 calls had been made from Dayanand's mobile to Vinaya. They have since learnt that he called Vinaya to meet him. He had dug out a pit in advance near Thumbe. When Vinaya responded and came to him, he asked her to part with around 15 sovereigns of gold ornaments she had worn for the marriage. When she refused, he murdered her by hitting her head with a boulder and buried her body with the help of a friend named Anand Poojary. He later participated in a cock fight the same day.

Poojary has been remanded to three days of police custody by the Puttur court, while Anand Poojary was remanded to judicial custody. After the family reported that the woman had gone missing, the police had closed in on Dayanand, but he acted as if he did not know anything. The policemen had to relentlessly question him before making him to confess what he had done. He also showed them the spot where he buried Vinaya's body. It is said that he has pledged some of the ornaments in a finance company.
