Mangalore, Mar 10:
“If the harassment of women continues, it will lead to women having to use spoons as weapons”, said Nasima Fathima, secretary, Karnataka Women’s Forum.

She was speaking at a protest organized by the Muslim central committee along with the Popular Front of India in front of the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office, condemning the harassment of women in the district including the recent police atrocity on women at Suratkal.

“We used to hear about atrocities on Dalits, but now the targets are women in Dakshina Kannada, which is called a literate district.

She said that the women are called goddesses here but still they are beaten up in the name of culture and religion and added that the state government is not good enough to protect ladies as the harassment of these people led Udupi MLA’s wife Padmapriya to end her life.

Ali Hasan, secretary, Muslim Central Committee, in his introductory speech said, “When the BJP government came to power in the state, such incidents of harassment began. But we will not tolerate such incidents”.

Pattabhirama Somayaji, leader, Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike, said that the policemen who tortured the women should be dismissed from the department.

Razak Kemmar, member, Popular Front of India, and P B D’Sa, district president, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), were also present.

I really applaud the leadership quality of muslim women particularly during this hardest times in Mangalore. We need to be united. Irrespective of caste and creed let all women of Mangalore join together and take out a rally so that our fundamentalists will be alert in further spoiling the atmosphere and attacking the innocent girls

These protests will not work. Woman and girls must learn Martial Arts. Those days are over Woman was just Baby making machine and cooking. Now the woman are working having one or two children. They cannot depend every time on police or security. They must defend themselves.

The Hindu Kundapur, reported in this morning's edition as, " Two college boys belonging to one community and two college girls belonging to another were reportedly eating ice-cream at a parlour in Kundapur of Udupi district on Monday, when the police took them to the station as a “precautionary measure”. According to one of the versions, some members of a reactionary group informed the police who came to the ice-cream parlour and took the four students to police station, enquired about their whereabouts and allowed them to go away. According to another source, the boys were assaulted by the police. However, neither version could be confirmed with the students involved. Superintendent of Police Pravin Pawar told The Hindu that the local police had received an information that some groups had identified the two boys and girls as belonging to different communities. The Kundapur police took them to the station to prevent any untoward incident from happening. Their parents were asked to take away their children, he said. WITH ALL THIS AROUND... DO YOU STILL WANT YOUR KIDS TO COME UP IN A PLACE LIKE THIS... WHEN OUR LADY PRESIDENT WAS ELECTED LOTS OF TALKS WERE GIVEN ON WOMEN DEVELOPEMENT IN THIS COUNTRY.. AND I CAN SEE IT NOW... SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR RIGHTS ..NOT RECEIVE...

This govt. is only interested in looting the spoils of power,it's not concerned about the real problems of people, they think nobody can dethrone them. They are doing what their predecessors did.I urge all the people to show peoples power through ballot,& end this corrupt, incompetent, headstrong, bankrupt govt. before it does any more harm to the people and state.

There are many cases of abuses against women in dakshina kannada and the numbers are increasing day by day. Unless the women comes out in large numbers and protest unitedly irrespective of any religion, then only their voices will be heard by this deaf Govt. Going by the recent incidence it shows that this govt has no respect for women nor does it have any responsibility for taking steps to prevent such attrocities on women.

I am glad to see the Karnataka State Women forum's reaction. But may I ask the secretary of the Karnataka Women Forum's why they have not raised the voice or protested against the recent bus conductor’s rude behavior with the elderly women passenger in Mangalore?
