Mangalore, May 14: “Students should grow up with the right knowledge by attending youth councils, reading books, and other activities and should use the knowledge when they grow up”, said Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza at the 15th National Council of Young Christian Students and Young Students Movement (YCM/YCS) at Shanthikirana near Bajjodi.

“Young students should acquire the knowledge to live in prosperity and also with faith. Knowledge makes everyone perfect and faith motivates them to do good work”, he said adding that young students should become catalysts of the movement and the topic of environment after participating in the council.

“Go back as messengers of the environment and harmony”, he said.

The Bishop inaugurated ‘Students for a Green and Harmonious World Through Prayer’. The week-long council is based on other issues like food crisis, human values, and divine plan for the harmonious existence of man and nature.

J R Lobo, executive director, Pilikula Nisargadhama, was the chief guest. Vincent Monteiro, former director, YCS/YSM Asia, was the guest of honour.

Fr Vincent Arokyadas and Fr Francis were also present along with chaplains and animators.

Delegates from the state-level are participating in the council with the aim of building a new society. The council will conclude on Thursday May 20 with a grand closing ceremony.

Congratulations..... & all the best to the council members of YCS/YSM India for your work you are aspiring for ‘Students for a Green and Harmonious World’. It is infact the need of the hour for our upcoming generation to consider the brewing up issues like climate change and harmony between nature and human beings which otherwise could even affect our survival on earth. And I THINK DAT yCS/ySM has done a commendable task by broaching up such issues for meditation and discussion. However, certain concrete steps have to be taken to ensure the participation of the students in confronting these socially relevant issues.

We understand that the Govt of India has recently passed a new resolution inviting the Foreign Educational Institutes to come to India and establish their campuses. This is a marvellous opporrtunity indeed for the Catholic Dioceses all over India, including Mangalore to embrace the opportunity to attract many of the foreign Educational Institutes to come to India and be part of the Catholic solidarity. The youth of India will benefit a great deal from the infusion of foreign educational influence into the maintream of India. Our Archbishops and Cardinals in India should therefore make speedy contacts with foreign Educational groups to utilize the existing Catholic Institutions and create collaborative efforts in order to display a conclave of human knowledge on the Indian soil so that millions of our young men and women will earn the privilege of foreign education in our own backyard. Instead of spending so much of money by going abroad, the youth of India can gain all the intellectual benefits on our own soil and produce the best of intellectuals within our own borders. India is the largest conglomerate of cultural demography that will enjoy the privilege of "Internationalism" within our own countr with the help of foreign educational campuses established within our own colleges and Universities. There will be a mulinational and multicultural integration within our own boundary so that we can export our wisdom to the rest of the world more attractively than ever before.

Congratulations to the organizers and office bearers of 15th YCS/YSM National Council Meeting at Mangalore. You have chosen an apt theme ‘Students for a Green and Harmonious World’. I wish you all a great success as you deliberate on issues like ‘ food crisis, human values’, etc. ‘According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), world population will increase to 8.3 billion by 2030. FAO estimates that net cereal deficit will rise to 265 million tonnes by 2030’. YCS/YSM is a great opportunity for young students across the country to commit themselves to become a new breed of young generation, who will be ready to go from ‘Campus to the Village’ to face the challenges and work innovative methods for ‘food security’ and ‘values for new civilization’. This great Movement should unleash winds of change, in the young minds ‘to be the best’ through the wonderful YCS/YSM Methodology of ‘SELF REVIEW’. God bless the Council Meeting.
