Defectors should be Debarred from Contesting for Six Years: BJP

Mysore, Nov 3 (PTI): Smarting under the recent rebellion that threatened the survival of its government, ruling BJP in Karnataka on Wednesday pitched for barring ''defectors'' from contesting elections for six years.

The meeting of the executive of the state party unit here called for suitable amendments to the anti-defection law in this regard, party spokesman C T Ravi told reporters.

The meeting said the Karnataka High Court verdict upholding Speaker K G Bopaiah's disqualification of 11 BJP rebel MLAs would be a deterrent to party hoppers.

The meeting condemned JD(S) and Congress for their alleged "one point agenda of destabilising and dethroning" the duly- elected BJP Government.

Inaugurating the meeting, state unit President K S Eswarappa said the party would not compromise with those indulging in anti-party activities.

Referring to "open lobbying and pressure" by some party MLAs for cabinet berths, he said all MLAs cannot be made ministers. "Those who are threatening to leave the party on this score can do so".

He appealed to party MLAs not be self-centred and have the best interest of the people at heart.

The B S Yeddyurappa Ministry, the first BJP government in the South, had faced two floor tests in the Assembly last month after 16 MLAs, including five independents, withdrew their support to it. They were later disqualified as MLAs by the Speaker.

I totally agree with Mr. Mallar's comments. These people made mockery of the Democracy. But unfortunately who is going to punish them? We citizens can, provided all citizens (educated) participate in the election process, then only we can teach them a lesson.

R Mallar, Kasragod/Dubai, I fully agree with you. A total reform is needed in our electoral system. Voters are being taken for a ride. Tax payer’s money is being squandered in the name of by-election. Elected representatives have no hesitation in crossing the fence in search of greener pasture. Voters should have the right to control elected representative from wandering. An undertaking or a sworn affidavit must be taken by the EC from all contestants that they would not join any other party or resign during the five years term, unless for serious health reason. However they must be given the liberty to oppose or support any bill which they feel right, irrespective of their party’s desire and it should remain secret.
I am sure all the above goes against the aspiration of all the politicians, which none of them will agree to make law.

Eshwarappaji, please start this task within your part. Check how many defectors from other parties have become BJP MLAs. Suspend them for 10 years. Then go and preach to others. You so called leaders do not have shame even.

Mr. Eshwarappa, what a discrimination ? If the MLAs' are leaving BJP then they are self-centred. But, when you buy other party's MLAs', if they are coming to BJP by accepting huge amount, then they are Angels ???. You are making them Ministers. People are so fool as you think Mr. Eshwarappa!

Shahnawaz, technically you are not right. Through operation kamala, MLAs were made to resign first. And later they contested under BJP symbol. So they did not defect as MLAs.
The remedy is to bar all the MLAs/ MPs who resign from assembly/ parliament before its term ends from contesting for I would say 10 years. This must include leaders contesting from 2 seats and giving up one seat later. Each election costs crores of money to tax payers.
Another issue the major parties like BJP and congress must think seriously is to form shadow cabinets before the election. This will ensure that mad scramble for ministry once the government is formed is reduced. If the assigned candidate fails to win, those positions only needs to be filled.

If we agree to BJP, then almost all BJP MlAs shall be disqualified from contesting elections as most of them have been bought through Operation Kamala. Any way its a good suggestion and at least horse trading can be stopped and MLAs loyalty can be assured.

Now that Yeddy's ministry is walking on a tightrope, they are trying all the possibile options to survive. It is certainly good for stable government to ban defected MLAs from re-entering the house again for not 6 years, but 10 years,so they cant contest two elections minimum.
I do not support any particular political party, but BJP has no moral right to advocate such bans, without first setting their acts right, i.e. do not make a defecter a minister at any cost. Then you talk about stable government.
