Udupi, Nov 3: A four-month-old baby died on the spot and at least five others were critically injured in a road mishap which occurred near Kallapu bridge on NH 17, near Katpady, on the evening of Wednesday November 3.

They were on their way from Kasargod to Mookambika temple, Kollur.

The injured have been identified as the infant’s mother Rajani, father Ashok, their son Mithun, grandmother Katyayini, and driver Shaji. The Ambassador car they were travelling in was smashed between an oncoming tempo which rammed into it and a truck that was on its rear.

They were taking the baby to Kollur temple for the naming ceremony when the ghastly accident occurred.

Tempo driver Ashfaque and cleaner Khalil have also been gravely injured in the mishap.

Traffic was hindered for sometime before being restored by Kaup police with assistance from the locals. Kaup police have registered a case in this regard.

The only solution to preventing such deadly accidents is by having safer roads. Currently, this highway NH17 is nowhere close to the standards of being called a highway. Head-on collissions often end up in fatalities and to avoid such accidents is to have 4 lane roads with big dividers. This way, head-on collisions can be avoided and overtaking will also be safer if people respect the lane discipline.

But our current goverment's machinery moves at a snail's pace if at all it moves. I still don't know where all the road tax money and the cess collected when purchasing fuel goes. Certainly we don't see it being spent on the development of roads.

GUYS, STOP MUD SLINGING AT EACH OTHERS. NO ONE CAN AVOID SUCH ACCIDENTS AND HUMAN LIVES WILL BE AT STAKE UNLESS THE RTO TAKES A FIRM AND BOLD STEP IN INSTALLING SPEED GOVERNERS TO REGULATE THE SPEED OF ALL VEHICLES IRRESPECTIVE OF TO WHOM THE VEHICLE BELONGS. RTO NEED TO INITIATE THIS STEP. UNTILL AND UNLESS THIS IN DONE, ACCIDENTS WIL TAKE PLACE AND PRECIOUS HUMAN LIVES WILL BE LOST. SO RTO WAKE UP AND ACT BEFORE IT'S TOOOOO LATE.

I think some people comment here just to malign the ruling party..and there is no logic behind their statements..The road where the accident took place looks good one and clean one..and to b fair..the roads are much more better then they used to b before 3/4 years.. but some crazy comentators(or i must say BJP haters) are hell bent on bringing politics to accidents. Go save karnataka from these people.jai ho karnataka

First of all my condolences are with the family. This is a tragic accident and these types of accidents occur ever day in our country taking away innocent lives which could have been prevented and this has been going on for years and has to stop. The causes could be plenty . As always I have stressed about the three E'S elsewhere in my letters to Daijiworld. Education,Engineering and Enforcement are all lacking. I travelled last on the Mangalore Kundapur stretch in a 7 seater in 2007 and it was a frightening experience as I though I would be swallowed up by an oncoming vehicle every 5 minutes. This is the state of our roads in almost all parts of the country although four laning is going on and has been completed in the trunk routes like Mumbai - Pune,Bangalore - chennai,Delhi-Punjab,Vizag-Kolkotta.People have generally been cooperative there with regard to land aquisitions. Kerala and Coastal Karnataka have been a bit of a problem. Hope we sort it out and we see good broad highways with central median, hard shoulder, service roads and reduced accidents and deaths on our highways in the future.

According to my own experience when I drive my car, many a times I have observed the vehicles coming from KERALA and GOA visting the temples or hospitals or wherever it may be, drive carelessly and overspeeding. They die themselves and also injure others. I have seen many times at junctions our police stand like statues, but no action they take by stopping such careless vehicles. Our country follows lot of foreign culture, but trafficwise the officials are most ignorant - let someone die, why should I bother, that are their feelings.

Speed control radar shall be installed in all highways. There should be black points to cancell the drivers licence for the period of five years. Huge fine shall be implemented for speedy drivers.... when it will be implemented????....

The roads in india are ment for 80Kms speed specially the Mangalaore Udupi highway as you have the traffic comeing from both the ways, Its our traffic department who has form & regulate huge fines for such rash drivers then only ppl will be more careful.
You get only one life and live it to the fullest, And remember you are not dyeing alone, there other behind you.......... So please dont blame any politcal party or roads for such accident.

i happened to be on the spot, and it was unfortunate that no police men or police were present on the spot, since the kaup police station was, 4kms away from the site of accident, and as the locals were helping to clear the traffic, a policemen from katpady beat post was such arogant that instead of co-operating with the locals he started answering rudely to the people saying "I need not do the duty for you people said me", this is what the people in the uniform performing there duty, instead of provinding the walky talky he didnt even try to call up his higher authority, it is really shamefull on their part.

We the public are fools. We do not know how to get the work done by our politicians. We know they are our servants still we are helpless. Because of their money power we become their servant.

Unless we are united this will go on.

I hope atleast now our politicians and PWD officials will rise up from their slumber and look at the conditions of the roads. What is the RTO doing? Only collecting taxes or has he any moral responsibility beyond that??? Its a nuisance travelling in Mangalore. The buses fly in the air instead of roads. Its high time that Mangalore citizens rise up and demand for better civic facilities.

Very sad indeed. May God recover them fast and make them to resume their normal life. The roads espeially in karnataka, that too in coastal part is in very bad shape. Unless and until the roads are repaired, we cant minimise the accidents. Its high time for both the Central and state govt to wake up, put aside their diffferences and work towards a common goal. Caught in between are the poor people of karnataka who are compelled to use roads on daily basis. Just to go kerala and see the conditions of roads, they are million times better than our roads. Wealthwise our state is richer than Kerala. But our state funds are looted by the politicians and bureaucrats. Gods curse be on them who take people for granted and who loot our wealth.
