Mangalore, Nov 14: National Award winner film director Abhayasimha said that reaching a situation where organizing a festival to screen good movies is unfortunate.

He was delivering his presidential speech at the four-day International Film Festival organized first time in the city by the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy of Bangalore and the Bellimandala and Belli Saakshi units of Dakshina Kannada district which was inaugurated by deputy commissioner Subhodh Yadav at Don Bosco Hall on Sunday November 14 at 9.30 am.

Further speaking he said that in recent days people cannot watch movies without popcorn, which represents that movies are not giving them any happiness. It is these outer objectives that satisfy them. He said creation of good audience is the present requirement. Distance between cinema media and society is not a good progress, he added.

This international film festival is a ray of hope for all downwards in film industry, he added. He asserted good audience will reject the movies of brutal nature. He called upon the audience to give rebirth for film industry by watching only good movies.

Nityananda Shetty, principal, Mahesh PU College, member of the organizing committee of the film festival in his keynote speech said that the academy has ventured into a novel plan of organizing International Film Festival in smaller cities this year and as a boost, the fest is evoking marvellous response from the audience in DK. He coined this is a historic moment in Mangalore as it hosts ace international film festival in the city.

M S Gunasheelan, member of Karnataka Film Academy, Bangalore was present on the occasion. He said that the film festival’s aim is to cater good movies for the audience.

Total of 16 international world classics will be screened (four films per day) and they will be projected in DVD format through powerful LCD projectors. The classics that will be screened at the fest include Belli Moda, Tied Hands, Turtles Can Fly, Spring Summer Fall Winter, Train in the Tenth Floor, Jumping Over the Puddle Again, Yesterday, The Chorus, City Lights, The Return, Pasanga, The President's Barber and White Ballon among others.

When the inaugural movie “Belli Moda” began sharp at 10.00 am, student audience gathered lauded the effort of organizers with thundering applause. This gave a feeling that movies of good taste always has future.

The films selected for the festival include three Indian films in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada languages. Other films are from Israel, Iran, Russia, Iran/Iraq, Czech, South Africa, France, Algeria, United States of America, and two each from China, and Korea.

Interested can get delegate passes for Rs 100 at selected places such as Mahesh Pre-university College, Ganapathi Junior College, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Dr H M Somashekarappa of Mangalore University, Karnataka Polytechnic, Govinda Dasa College Suratkal, Ambit Computers and Gokul Market. Students will be given a 50 percent concession.

Dr Nityananda B Shetty, Peincipal f Mahesh PU College welcomed the gathering. Dr S H Shivaparakash delivered vote of thanks. Dr Dinesh Nayak conducted the programme. Kumari Sanghavi sung the prayer song.
