Udupi: Prices of vegetables vary in local market

Udupi, Jul 29: Price variation of vegetables is continuing in the market. While the prices of some vegetables have shot up, others have become cheaper.

Tomato, which crossed Rs 100 per kg a month ago, has slumped to Rs 12 to Rs 15 in retail market. In wholesale market the price is Rs 10 per kilo.

Drumstick price has also come down. From Rs 100 per kilo, the price has slumped to Rs 40 per kilo in retail market and Rs 30 in wholesale.

The prices of other vegetables have seen a slight increase compared to last week. Potato which was being sold at Rs 25 per kilo is costing Rs 30 now. Vendors say that the price might escalate further as huge quantity of crop is lost in neighbouring states.

Ridgegourd price has jumped from Rs 50 to Rs Rs 60, Carrot from Rs 45 to Rs 60, Capsicum from Rs 60 to Rs 75 and onion from Rs 25 to Rs 30.

Beetroot jumped from Rs 40 to Rs 50, brinjal from Rs 35 to Rs 40, cabbage from Rs 25 to Rs 30, garlic from Rs 80 to Rs 90, ginger from Rs 40 to Rs 50, long beans from Rs 45 to Rs 60 and bittergourd from Rs 40 to Rs 45.

Beans is selling at Rs 60, ladies finger or ocra at Rs 50, Sambar cucumber at Rs 25, raddish at Rs 30 and Cauliflower at Rs 45.

Due to heavy rains, huge quantity of leafy vegetables got destroyed. So the supply is less in market. The prices have shot up. Spinach, coriander leaves, fenugreek leaves are selling at Rs 8 to Rs 10 per bunch. Though the prices have increased the quality of leafy vegetables is not good.

The prices of vegetables will naturally increase as the month of Ashada is getting over and Shravana is approaching. Shravana month is full of festivals and is also considered auspicious for religious and marriage functions.

Udupi district gets supply of vegetables from neighbouring districts of Chikkamagaluru, Davanagere, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru Rural and Kolar. Local producers supply only ocra, aubergine, cucumber and ridgegourd.
