Mangalore: Bishop to Honour Three on Behalf of United Youngsters During ‘Wilfy Nite’

Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (CN)

Mangalore, Apr 17: Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius D’Souza will honour three eminent personalities from the Mangalorean Catholic community who have been the backbone for Wilfy Nites and United Youngsters, during the ‘Tribute to Wilfy Rebimbus’ programme to be held on Sunday April 24 at the Town Hall. The Bishop will do the honours on behalf of United Youngsters and the Rebimbus family and will preside over the event.

As announced earlier in these columns, this will be the first full pledge Wilfy Nite without the legend Wilfy Rebimbus. This event will be a tribute to the legendary singer and will co,prise of his theme songs. The show will also feature songs composed by Veena Rebimbus and Vishwas Rebimbus.

Lawrence Pinto, Leo Rodrigues and Felix Lobo

Speaking to Daijiworld, Leslie Rego, convener of United Youngsters, who is also compering the event, said that honouring three eminent personalities—Lawrence Pinto from Kuwait, Leo Rodrigues from Abu Dhabi, and Felix Lobo from Doha, Qatar—was a dream of Wilfy’s which could not be fulfilled during his time. They have been great supporters of Wilfy’s compositions and his musical nites and of more significance is their support to Wilfy during his last days. Apart from this, these three personalities have contributed immensely to the community as a whole.

Pinto, along with Louis Rodrigues of Kuwait, is the co-founder of ‘Gulf Voice of Mangalore’, which is a huge success with two of its editions already producing some of the best Konkani talents around the Gulf. Pinto, who leads Youth Recreation Centre in Kuwait, is a great promoter of Konkani cultural events in that country and also a supporter of football who owns a football club in Kuwait.

Leo Rodrigues, a well-known entrepreneur from Abu Dhabi, is a supporter of Konkani culture and language besides being a community leader. He has led the Konkani Cultural Organization (KCO) for two terms in Abu Dhabi and is also a recipient of ‘Rachana NRI Entrepreneur of the Year 2009’. He has been helping and supporting Konkani events around the Gulf and Mangalore.

Felix Lobo, an entrepreneur from Doha-Qatar, is the person responsible for registering the word ‘Konkani’ with the Qatar government so that Konkani events are organized in Doha without any legal problems. He has successfully led the Mangalore Cricket Club for 13 years and is now patron of the Mangalore Cultural Association (MCA) which is hosting the ‘Gulf Voice of Mangalore – 2012’. A great fan and supporter of Wilfy Rebimbus, he is responsible for hosting many Wilfy Nites as well as Konkani programmes in Doha in the past.

Other highlights of the show are:

New musical album of Wilfy Rebimbus’ ‘Hanv Tuka Tu Maka’  will be released which also comprises the new songs of Veena and Vishwas. These will also be rendered during the show.

A book titled ‘Wilfycho Vinchnaar Kannio’ comprising of his selected short stories will also be released.

The entertainment will consist of new songs as well as some of Wilfy’s theme-based songs, dance, and drama scenes. There will not be jokes or fast numbers as this is a tribute to Wilfy.

The programme will begin at 5:30 pm sharp with the stage programme followed by the entertainment. It is scheduled to conclude by 9 pm.

Entries are restricted to invitees only. However, our well-wishers are requested to contact members of the Rebimbus family and United Youngsters for the passes.

Congratulations to Lawrence Pinto, Leo Rodrigues and Felix Lobo, the right deserving people of Gulf who really worked hard for Konkani. Lawrence Pinto is a person who gave many super hit successful Konkani shows in Kuwait and also made history with Konkani's only dedicated international singing competition in Gulf 'GULF VOICE OF MANGALORE'. Hope local Konkani associations of Gulf will also consider their achievements and show respect as the United Youngsters who are in India showed their gratitude.

The continued support of Bishop Aloysius D'Souza is very much appreciated. The Konkany culture and the Konkany community is very much a part of the Mangalore Diocese. Konkany is our main language, and onviously Konkany is part of our daily prayer as we earn our daily bread and our daily life in Mangalore.

May the United Youngsrters continue their dedication towards our society so that we shall be benefited with many more "Meena-Veena and Vishwas Nites" all the time. Our support and best wishes will always be there from a distance.
